Yesterday was a big day in the journey to the 24 hour record, we were at the with looking at how to make me faster.
First thing to do was to establish a base setting. It was okaaaaayyy, kinda Ironman typical, they ride 100 odd miles after their swim and they aren't that aero compared to time trailers doing sub hour efforts.
Then we tested individual aspects so we knew what options were best, position of radio packs etc.
Then we started swapping the cockpit to Drag2Zero's advanced aero skis (what you hold onto) and adjusting them and me to a position that was comfortable AND aero we ended up here.
The Endura helmet has a patented removable tail and we ended up with a custom 3D printed slightly shorter version. It was faster than the longer one once my arms had been moved up and my head went down.
So what's it like?
You sit on the bike pedalling gently. Get the thumbs up from the guys in the control room and get going properly. Then the fans spool up!
So I'm just sitting there yeah? Nope.
You ride at precisely 12 m/s wheel speed (for my record attempt that's the speed.) Stay still, unless told to adjust, watch for the text instructions displayed on the floor from the projector above.
Pretend to look at a predefined place (gaffer tape ahead) but actually watch the live telemetry to keep wheel speed right and watch the display from the three cameras pointed at me to make sure I don't drift away from the tested position.
Try to relax, breath, don't sneeze! Watch the counter as the timed recordings are done in 30 second intervals, discuss, adjust, repeat about 50 times.
The guys including Simon Smart were amazing yesterday, with all his years of experience in F1 racing and getting cyclists to go faster it was an invaluable day. And his support moving forward is humbling. 👍
Many thanks to Endura for all this support, I can't thank you enough. Photo
