Many thanks to the Save Wemyss Cave Society who gave us a tour of the caves today to check for hibernating bats. We only found one pipistrelle but saw lots of other interesting things: Herald Moths, Drone Flies, probable Cave Spider and last but not least the fascinating Pictish carvings.

Great bat masks created by the Abernethy Beavers last night. We managed to see and hear some hardy common pipistrelles out on the chilly evening, followed by a talk, then mask making. The beavers had lots of good bat questions.

It was hard to get the right light to get a sharp focus (especially holding a bat with one hand and videoing with the other) but you get the idea that Biscuit is enjoying one of his mealworms.

Just when you think bat care season is over…Here’s Biscuit, a juvenile male soprano pipistrelle who was found on the ground in Blairadam Forest. He apparently just got weak, so should be releasable soon. He ate 9 mealworm innards then quickly got the hang of eating whole mealworms and polished off 8. His weight went up from 5.2g to 5.8g after one feed! He’ll get a test flight tomorrow and should be back to Blairadam soon. Thanks Amanda for helping him. Video to follow.

Barry had a little fan who created a poster for his release last night. He’d got weak after being trapped in a school and was underweight. Ideally a pipistrelle should be around 5 g for release. Bad weather or clashes with surveys delayed his release so he got up to 6.3 g. I thought I’d better release him before he got too heavy to fly! Within a minute he was flying with another bat. 😊

As I was at the National Bat Conference in Durham, I missed the Tentsmuir trial of the new ‘no escape’ net I made which can be put around a bat box then pulled tight with a drawstring. Previously, 10 or more Natterer’s would escape from the sides of a hand net. Yesterday, 55 Natterer’s were caught from this box, with no escapees. Thanks to Emile and Quinn for photos.

A bat group team effort on this one. When I got the call about this bat I’d just got home after a long drive and couldn’t really face another hour (round trip) of driving. I hatched an alternative plan. The finder was just about to drive home to Dunfermline, conveniently just a few streets away from Hayley from the bat group. Hayley agreed to keep the bat overnight then we met up halfway the following day. I was excited to hear it was a Natterer’s - the first one I’ve had in care - a juvenile female who had probably got weak after the storm earlier in the week. She immediately took to mealworms and had ten in a row, shortly followed by more she took from a bowl. She passed her flight test with flying colours (pun intended!) so was successfully released where she came from. 🦇😊

Apart from one car casualty on the rough track, a good day of box checking at Tentsmuir today. One box had 49 Natterer’s.
UPDATE: our master data handler Emilie noted that it was actually 50 bats in this box, including a dead female ringed in 2011, as a juvenile in a box that she outlived!
