Amazing to see this from the air -

Aerial image of Ardoch Roman Fort near Braco in Perthshire, Scotland. Its defensive ditches are among the best preserved of any Roman fort.

Ardoch was first built in the 1st century AD and was part of the Gask Ridge system, which was a series of forts, fortlets, and watchtowers built by the Romans to control and monitor the area.

Ardoch was probably garrisoned by the First Cohort of Spaniards. A tombstone with a Latin inscription was found reused in the fort in the 17th century and reads:

"Dis Manibus
Ammonius Da-
mionis (filius) (centurio) coh(ortis)
I Hispanorum
stipendiorum
XXVII heredes
f(aciendum) c(uraverunt)"

Translation:

"To the spirits of the departed: Ammonius, (son) of Damio, centurion of the First Cohort of Spaniards, of 27 years’ service, (lies here). His heirs had this made."

(Roman Inscriptions of Britain 2213).

The tombstone is currently in the Hunterian Museum in Glasgow.

Information on some future local pilgrimages with Fife Pilgrim Way Pastor -

This summer, I will be running a short series of pilgrimages taking in places associated with saints with a connection to Fife. The first of these will be on Thursday 30th July, when we look at St Margaret (Queen Margaret of Scotland).

This walk will leave South Queensferry at 10.30 (the start point is The Priory Church South Queensferry) and it will be possible to join it closer to Dunfermline for those who might struggle with the whole 20km.
