The Winking Sheep Sportive

The Winking Sheep Sportive Welcome to the 5th Winking Sheep sportive! New for 2019, along with our 55, 75 and 90 mile course is The Ram - 112 miles and over 13,100ft ascent.

The North Pennines is known as the Roof of England, as it features England's highest climb and England's two highest mountain passes. If you haven't visited the area before, this really is an undiscovered cycling gem!! What better way to experience the stunning scenery, winding roads and those climbs than to join us for our 3rd Winking Sheep Sportive? (formerly known as Roof of England Sportive)

We have been busy rebranding this event, as we all believe it has what it takes to be up there with the most respected UK sportives.

'The Winking Sheep' 90 mile course with nearly 9000ft ascent is difficult, and it's meant to be! After 75 miles of course, you'll be welcomed by the thigh burning 25% slope climb up Peat Hill from Westgate. https://www.strava.com/routes/5828379

St Johns Chapel Audax Events 4-5 June 2022
Not the Winking Sheep Sportive - but still a great chance to ride round the North Pennines.
Unfortunately the Winking Sheep Sportive isn't running this year, hopefully next.
As an alternative we're running two Audax events on Saturday 4 June and Sunday 5 June, so you can make a weekend of it if you want to.
They're not the same routes as the Winking Sheep Sportive but it still gives you a great chance to explore the area with it's quiet roads and stunning scenery.
The routes aren't flat and there's a few short steeper bits but most of the climbing is gradual and the long climbs mean some fantastic exhilarating descents.

Sunday 5 June 2022 - http://www.audax.uk/event-details?eventId=9273 definitely a hilly day out, 6 main climbs, the first one is Crawleyside but they get easier after that!
When you get back to the finish you'll be able to relax and get something to eat and drink in the Chatterbox Cafe.

**2019 EVENT CANCELLED**

It’s with great regret that I inform you this year’s Winking Sheep Sportive has had to be cancelled.

The Velo North closed road sportive is scheduled for the following weekend and we believe this will catastrophically affect rider numbers for our event.

The Winking Sheep is a non profit, charitable event and we run this for the love of cycling – we just can’t compete against a 15k rider closed road event; even if our courses are better! 😉

We understand that some of you will have made travel and accommodation plans – this has made the decision even harder and we can only apologies for this.

The Winking Sheep Sportive (and THE RAM course) will be back in 2020, but on a different date.

Refunds will be made as soon as possible to those who have entered so far.

We really hope you understand and continue to support us in bringing riders from near and far together for the epic ups and downs of the North Pennines.
