Jesus, Our Advocate

Text: 1 John 2:1–2 (NKJV)

“My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.”

There are many things we bikers understand. We understand the importance of having the right equipment, knowing where we are going, and having someone to help when things go wrong.

On a motorcycle journey, we can sometimes take a wrong turning. We can lose our way. We can make mistakes. And in life, every one of us has made wrong turns too.

The Bible calls those wrong turns sin.

John writes, “These things I write to you, so that you may not sin.” God never encourages us to sin. He calls us to live in a way that honours Him. But John also recognises something about every one of us: we fail.

And that is where the wonderful good news of the Gospel comes in.

John says:

“If anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.”

An advocate is someone who speaks on behalf of another. Someone who stands for you.

Imagine being in serious trouble and having someone perfectly righteous standing beside you, speaking on your behalf. That is what Jesus does for those who belong to Him.

But Jesus can only be our Advocate because He is “Jesus Christ the righteous.”

He never sinned. He never took a wrong turn. He never rebelled against His Father. Yet He went to the cross and willingly took upon Himself the punishment that our sins deserved.

John says:

“He Himself is the propitiation for our sins.”

That means that through His sacrifice on the cross, Jesus dealt with the barrier of sin between us and God. He took our place. He paid the price.

The cross tells us two wonderful things: sin is serious, but God’s love is greater.

And this message is not just for a select few.

John says that Jesus died not only for our sins, “but also for the whole world.”

That means this invitation is for the biker and the non-biker; for the respectable person and the person with a troubled past; for those who think they are good enough and for those who know they have made a mess of life.

Jesus Christ came for sinners.

Perhaps today you know that your life has taken some wrong turns. Perhaps there are things in your past that you regret. Perhaps you have tried to live life your own way, but deep down you know that you need forgiveness and peace with God.

The good news is this:

You do not have to clean yourself up before coming to Jesus. You come to Him as you are.

The Bible says that Jesus is our Advocate, but we must personally put our faith and trust in Him.

So today, I want to invite you to respond to Jesus Christ.

Not simply to believe that He existed. Not simply to admire Him. But to put your personal faith in Him—to turn from your sin and trust Him as your Lord and Saviour.

You may have travelled many roads in your life, but there is one decision more important than any other:

What will you do with Jesus Christ?

He died for you. He rose again. He offers forgiveness, new life and the assurance of eternal life to everyone who comes to Him in faith.

If you have never trusted Jesus, you can do so today.

You might pray something like this:

“Lord Jesus Christ, I know that I am a sinner and that I cannot save myself. Thank You for dying on the cross to pay the price for my sins and rising again. Please forgive me, come into my life, and help me to follow You. I put my faith and trust in You as my Lord and Saviour. Amen.”

And for those of us who already know Christ, what wonderful assurance we have:

When we fail, we have an Advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ the righteous.

So let us live for Him, trust in Him, and tell others about Him.

Because whatever roads we travel in this life, there is no greater destination than knowing Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour.

When We Get It Wrong

1 John 1:8–10

There is something most bikers understand very well: none of us gets every journey right.

* Sometimes we take a wrong turning.
* Sometimes we misjudge a bend.
* Sometimes we make a mistake that could have had serious consequences.

And life is rather like that.

The Bible tells us in 1 John 1:8:

“If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.”

John is reminding us that none of us is perfect.

We may look the part. We may have the right bike, the right clothing and plenty of experience on the road—but spiritually, none of us can say, “I’ve never done anything wrong.”

* We have all taken wrong turns.
* We have all said things we regret.
* We have all made selfish choices.
* We have all fallen short of God’s standard.

And the danger is that we can try to hide it—even from God.

But here’s the wonderful news.

“If we confess our sins…”

Verse 9 says:

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

What a tremendous promise!

God doesn’t say, “Make yourself perfect and then come to Me.”

He says, “Confess.”

That simply means being honest with God.

“Lord, I got it wrong.”
“Lord, I sinned.”
“Lord, I need Your forgiveness.”

And what does God promise?

Forgiveness.

Not because we deserve it, but because of what Jesus Christ has done for us on the cross.

When we confess our sin, God doesn’t rub our noses in our past. He doesn’t say, “I’ll forgive you, but I’ll never forget what you did.”

He forgives and cleanses.

That’s grace.

Don’t pretend you’re on the right road

Verse 10 gives us another warning:

“If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar…”

Imagine riding along and ignoring every warning sign, pretending that the road ahead is perfectly safe when you know there is a dangerous bend coming.

Pretending doesn’t change reality.

And neither does pretending that sin doesn’t exist.

The Christian life isn’t about pretending that we are perfect.

It is about knowing where to go when we get it wrong.

We go to Jesus.

Back on the road

Perhaps some of us today are carrying something from the past.

Perhaps there is something we have done—or something we have failed to do—that troubles our conscience.

Maybe we have never brought it honestly before God.

Then hear the promise of 1 John 1:9:

“He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

The answer isn’t to run away from God.

It is to turn towards Him.

Just as a rider who realises he has taken the wrong road needs to stop, turn around and get back on the right road, so we need to turn from sin and turn towards Christ.

That is repentance.

And the good news of the Gospel is this:

Jesus Christ died for sinners.

He died for people like you and me.

He offers forgiveness, cleansing and a new beginning.

So:

* Let’s not pretend we’re perfect.
* Let’s be honest before God.
* Let’s confess our sins.
* Let’s receive His forgiveness.

And then, by His grace, get back on the road and follow Jesus.

“We may not always know what lies around the next bend, but if Jesus is riding with us, we know who holds the road ahead.”

There is something about riding a motorcycle that gives you a real appreciation for light.

When you’re riding on a dark road at night, you depend upon your headlights. You want to see what is ahead. You want to know where the road is going, where the bends are, and whether there are obstacles in your path.

And if your light isn’t working, you don’t think, “It’ll probably be all right.”

You fix it!

Because you need the light.

The Bible tells us something far more important:

“God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.”
— 1 John 1:5, NKJV

1. God is light

God is completely holy, completely good and completely truthful.

There is no darkness in Him.

When we look honestly at our own lives, we know that we are not like that.

We have all made mistakes.

We have all said things we shouldn’t have said, done things we shouldn’t have done, and thought things we wouldn’t want anybody else to know about.

The Bible calls that sin.

And sin isn’t simply breaking a few religious rules. Sin separates us from a holy God.

We might be able to hide things from other people.

We might be able to put on the right clothes, smile and say, “I’m fine.”

But God sees beyond the outward appearance.

He sees the heart.

2. We cannot live in darkness and claim to walk with God

John says:

“If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.”
— 1 John 1:6, NKJV

That’s a pretty strong statement.

It isn’t enough simply to say that we believe in God.

The question is:

Are we walking with Him?

We can know all about Christianity without actually knowing Christ.

We can attend church.

We can carry a Bible.

We can even call ourselves Christians.

But the question God asks is much deeper:

“Do you know My Son, Jesus Christ?”

3. Jesus is the light we need

The wonderful news of Christianity is that God doesn’t leave us in the darkness.

He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, into the world.

Jesus said:

“I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”
— John 8:12, NKJV

Jesus came to do something that none of us could do for ourselves.

He took our sin upon Himself.

He went to the cross.

He died in our place.

And three days later He rose again.

That’s the Gospel.

Jesus died for sinners.
Jesus rose from the dead.
And Jesus offers forgiveness and new life to everyone who will come to Him.

You don’t have to make yourself good enough before coming to Jesus.

You come as you are.

He is the One who changes us.

4. Walk in the light

John then gives us this wonderful promise:

“But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another.”
— 1 John 1:7, NKJV

Notice that John doesn’t say “if we are perfect.”

He says “if we walk in the light.”

Walking in the light means being honest before God.

It means saying:

“Lord Jesus, I need You.
I have sinned.
I cannot save myself.
Please forgive me and lead me.”

And then we begin a new journey with Christ.

Just as we wouldn’t set off on a long ride without knowing where we’re going, we shouldn’t travel through life without knowing our ultimate destination.

And the greatest destination isn’t Cornwall, Scotland, France or anywhere else our bikes might take us.

It is home with Christ.

5. We ride together

There is another beautiful thing about being a biker.

We understand fellowship.

If someone has a breakdown, we don’t simply wave goodbye and carry on.

We stop.

We help.

We wait.

We make sure they get home safely.

That’s what Christian fellowship should be like.

We’re travelling the road together.

Sometimes one of us is strong and another is struggling.

Sometimes one needs encouragement.

Sometimes one needs someone simply to stop and listen.

We don’t leave people behind.

And Jesus doesn’t leave His people behind either.

An invitation

So let me finish with a simple question.

Are you walking in the light?

Not, “Do you go to church?”

Not, “Were you brought up as a Christian?”

Not, “Do you believe there is a God?”

But:

Do you personally know Jesus Christ?

Perhaps you’ve known about Jesus for years but have never actually surrendered your life to Him.

Perhaps you’ve been away from God for a long time.

Perhaps you’ve realised that you have been travelling your own road in darkness.

Then now can be the time you turn around.

You can come to Jesus Christ.

You can ask Him to forgive your sins.

You can put your trust in Him.

And you can begin walking in His light.

The Bible says:

“The blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.”
— 1 John 1:7, NKJV

All sin.

Not some sin.

Not the respectable sins.

Not only the sins we think God might forgive.

All sin.

That is the grace of God.

So, when we climb onto our bikes and head out onto the road, let’s remember:

Keep your eyes on the light.
Walk with Jesus.
Look after one another.
And never forget where the road ultimately leads.

And if you’ve never personally put your trust in Jesus Christ, I invite you now:

Come out of the darkness.
Come into the light.
Come to Jesus.

There is something about riding a motorcycle that reminds us of how small we really are.

We can travel great distances, climb mountains, cross open countryside and experience the freedom of the road. But however powerful our motorcycle may be, we are still vulnerable. We cannot control the weather, the road, the traffic or what may happen around the next bend.

And Psalm 138 reminds us that there is One who sees us, knows us and is able to hold us in His hands.

1. “Though the LORD is on high, yet He regards the lowly” — verse 6

God is great and majestic. He is the Creator of the universe.

Yet the wonderful truth of Christianity is that this great God is interested in ordinary people like us.

He sees us when nobody else sees us.

He knows our joys, our disappointments, our fears, our failures and our regrets.

Perhaps sometimes you have wondered, “Does God really care about me?”

The answer of Scripture is yes.

God cares so much that He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, into this world to seek and save those who are lost.

2. “Though I walk in the midst of trouble, You will revive me” — verse 7

Notice that David doesn’t say, “I will never have trouble.”

He says, “Though I walk in the midst of trouble…”

Being a Christian does not mean that life will always be easy. Christians still experience illness, bereavement, disappointment, accidents, broken relationships and difficult circumstances.

But we do not face them alone.

God promises His presence.

And there is an even deeper trouble from which every one of us needs rescuing: the problem of sin.

We can maintain our motorcycles, polish our helmets and make ourselves look respectable on the outside. But none of us can repair the human heart.

The Bible says that all have sinned.

That is why Jesus came.

At the cross, Jesus took upon Himself the punishment that sinners deserve. He died in our place, and He rose again.

The Christian message is not “Make yourself good enough for God.”

It is:

Come to Jesus. Trust Him. Receive His forgiveness.

3. “The LORD will perfect that which concerns me” — verse 8

What a wonderful promise!

God has not finished with us.

Perhaps you look back at your life and think of mistakes you wish you could undo. Perhaps you carry regrets that nobody else knows about.

Jesus Christ offers something better than simply trying to forget the past.

He offers forgiveness and a new beginning.

The Bible says:

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.”
— 2 Corinthians 5:17

And Psalm 138 finishes with these words:

“Do not forsake the works of Your hands.”

If you belong to Christ, you can trust Him with your future.

A final question

When we ride, we trust our motorcycle to carry us safely.

But there comes a day when every journey on this earth comes to an end.

The most important question is not:

“What motorcycle do I ride?”

It is:

“Do I know Jesus Christ?”

Jesus said:

“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
— John 14:6

You don’t need to become religious before coming to Jesus.

You simply need to come as you are.

Turn from your sin. Put your trust in Christ. Ask Him to forgive you and become Lord of your life.

Then you can face not only today’s roads, but life’s final destination, knowing that you are in the hands of the One who says:

“I will not forsake you.”

So let us ride with gratitude, live with purpose, and above all, follow Jesus.

When we ride, we see things that are easy to miss when travelling by car. Open roads, mountains, valleys, coastlines and changing skies remind us that there is a Creator behind the creation.

But Hebrews tells us something even greater: God has spoken.

He spoke in the past through the prophets, but now He has spoken to us through His Son, Jesus Christ.

1. God has spoken — v.1–2

“God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son…”

God has never been silent.

Through the Old Testament He spoke through prophets, visions and promises. But His greatest message wasn’t written on a stone tablet or delivered by a prophet.

God’s greatest message came in a Person—Jesus Christ.

When we want to know what God is like, we look at Jesus.

2. Jesus is greater than everything — v.2–3

Hebrews says that through Christ God “made the worlds.”

Think about that when you’re riding through the countryside. Every mountain, river, coastline and sunset exists because of Him.

But Jesus isn’t merely the Creator.

Verse 3 says He is:

“the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person.”

Jesus reveals God to us perfectly.

And then comes the heart of the Gospel:

“when He had by Himself purged our sins…”

Our motorcycles may be polished and maintained, but our lives can become stained by sin.

We cannot clean sin away by good works, religion or trying harder.

Jesus did it Himself.

At the cross, He dealt with our sin.

3. Jesus is King — v.3–4

The passage concludes by saying that Jesus:

“sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.”

He sat down because His work of redemption was accomplished.

The risen Christ is not still hanging on the cross. He is alive, victorious and reigning.

That gives us tremendous confidence as Christians.

We don’t follow a dead teacher.

We follow the living Son of God.

Every journey needs a destination.

You can have the finest motorcycle, the best equipment and the most beautiful road—but if you don’t know where you’re going, you’re simply travelling.

Life is rather like that.

Hebrews tells us where our eyes must be fixed:

Jesus Christ.

So when we ride, let us remember:

He created the road.
He created the world around us.
He speaks to us.
He has dealt with our sin.
He is risen.
He reigns.
And one day, He will bring us safely home.

Conclusion

Perhaps the simplest message we can take from Hebrews 1:1–4 is this:

God has spoken.
His message is Jesus.
Jesus is greater than all.
Jesus has dealt with our sin.
And Jesus is Lord.

So, brothers and sisters, when you start your engine and head out onto the road, don’t merely enjoy the ride.

Listen to the One who made the road.
Follow the One who gave His life for you.
And keep your eyes fixed on Jesus.

“Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.” — Hebrews 12:2 (NKJV)

Psalm 139:23–24

“Search me, O God, and know my heart;
Try me, and know my anxieties;
And see if there is any wicked way in me,
And lead me in the way everlasting.” — Psalm 139:23–24 (NKJV)

Introduction

When we ride a motorcycle, we trust the bike because we know it has been checked. We check the tyres, oil, brakes, lights and fuel before setting off.

But there is something far more important that needs checking than our motorcycle — our heart.

David ends Psalm 139 by asking God to examine him. He is effectively saying:

“Lord, look inside me. Show me what is wrong, and then lead me in Your way.”

That is a challenging prayer for every Christian biker.

1. “Search me, O God”

David doesn’t ask God merely to look at his outward behaviour.

He says, “Search me.”

God sees beyond the helmet, riding gear and outward appearance. He sees our thoughts, motives, attitudes and desires.

We can fool other people, and sometimes we can even fool ourselves — but we cannot hide anything from God.

So the first question for us is:

“Lord, what do You see when You look into my heart?”

2. “Know my heart”

The heart represents the centre of who we are.

It is possible to look like a committed Christian on the outside while something different is happening inside.

We may have the Christian badge, attend church, ride with Christian friends and talk about our faith — yet still harbour anger, pride, resentment, unforgiveness or selfishness.

David invites God to examine all of it.

That takes humility.

3. “See if there is any wicked way in me”

This is perhaps the hardest part of the prayer.

David isn’t asking God simply to reassure him that everything is fine.

He’s saying:

“Lord, if there is something wrong in me, show me.”

That’s a dangerous prayer — but it is also a wonderfully liberating prayer.

When God reveals something that needs changing, He doesn’t expose us to condemn us. He reveals it so that He can forgive us, cleanse us and change us.

4. “Lead me in the way everlasting”

David doesn’t finish with, “Tell me what’s wrong.”

He asks God to lead him.

The Christian life isn’t simply about discovering our faults. It is about allowing God to change our direction.

Just as we follow a route when riding, we need to allow God to determine our spiritual route.

Sometimes God says:

Slow down.

Sometimes:

Turn around.

Sometimes:

Take a different road.

And sometimes He simply says:

Keep following Me.

The destination is “the way everlasting.”

Conclusion

Before we ride, we check our bikes.

Before we begin another journey with God, perhaps we should pray David’s prayer:

“Search me, O God.”

Not:

“Search everybody else.”

Not:

“Show me what is wrong with them.”

But:

“Search me.”

Ask God:

* Is there anything in my heart that needs changing?
* Is there anyone I need to forgive?
* Is there an attitude I need to surrender?
* Is there something I’m putting before God?
* Am I truly following where He is leading?

And then pray:

“Lord, show me — forgive me — change me — and lead me.”

Final thought for bikers

Every ride has a destination.

Our greatest journey is not measured in miles, but in the direction of our lives.

So before we start the engine and ride out, let us make Psalm 139:23–24 our prayer:

“Search me, O God…
And lead me in the way everlasting.”

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Search our hearts and reveal anything in us that does not please You. Forgive us where we have gone wrong, cleanse us and change us. Help us to surrender our plans, our attitudes and our lives to You. As we ride our roads, help us to follow Your road — the way everlasting. Keep us safe, keep us faithful, and keep us close to Jesus.
In His name we pray. Amen 🙏🏻

“How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand; When I awake, I am still with You.”
— Psalm 139:17–18 (NKJV)

When we get on our bikes, we normally have a destination in mind.

We know where we’re going—or at least we think we do!

We check the weather, the fuel, the tyres, the brakes and perhaps the sat-nav. We prepare ourselves and our bikes for the journey.

But Psalm 139 asks us to think about a much bigger journey: the journey of life.

David says, “How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God!”

Imagine that. The God who created the heavens and the earth is thinking about you.

You might feel insignificant. You might sometimes wonder whether anyone really knows you or understands what you’re going through.

God does.

He knows your past, your failures, your successes, your fears and your hopes. Nothing about you is hidden from Him.

And yet, amazingly, He still wants you.

More numerous than the sand

David says God’s thoughts towards him are “more in number than the sand.”

Think about the sand on a beach.

Pick up a handful and try counting it.

You can’t.

Now imagine every grain of sand representing a thought of God towards you.

David is saying that God’s knowledge, attention and care are beyond our ability to comprehend.

That’s an extraordinary thought.

“I am still with You”

Then David says:

“When I awake, I am still with You.”

We can leave home in the morning, get on our bikes and travel hundreds of miles.

But there is nowhere we can ride where God is not present.

And here’s the important point:

God’s presence is not just about keeping us safe on the road.

We can have an accident. We can become ill. Life can bring disappointment, loss and hardship.

The promise is something deeper:

God will not abandon those who put their trust in Him.

But what about our sin?

Perhaps you’re thinking, “If God knows everything about me, He knows the things I’m not proud of.”

Yes, He does.

Psalm 139 tells us that God knows us completely.

And that could be frightening—unless we understand the Gospel.

God knows our sin, but He has also provided a way for our sin to be forgiven.

Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners.

He died on the cross, taking the punishment that we deserve, and He rose again from the dead.

So Christianity isn’t about pretending that we’re good enough for God.

It’s about recognising that we need God’s forgiveness and trusting in what Jesus has done for us.

The greatest journey

Every biker understands that eventually every journey comes to an end.

But life itself is a journey, and one day each of us will stand before our Creator.

The wonderful news is that we don’t have to face that day alone.

Through faith in Jesus Christ, we can know God personally, receive forgiveness and have the assurance of eternal life.

So as you ride today, remember Psalm 139:17–18:

God knows you.
God sees you.
God thinks about you.
And God invites you to come to Him through Jesus Christ.

You may never know what is around the next bend in the road.

But if you belong to Christ, you can face the journey knowing:

“When I awake, I am still with You.”

Let us pray ..

Father God,

Thank You that You know each one of us completely and yet You still love us.

Thank You that Your thoughts towards us are more numerous than the sand.

Thank You especially for Jesus, who died for our sins and rose again so that we might be forgiven and reconciled to You.

For those who already know You, strengthen their faith and help them to be witnesses for Christ wherever they ride.

For those who do not yet know You, speak to their hearts today. Help them to recognise their need for forgiveness and to put their trust in Jesus.

Watch over us on our journeys, but above all, lead us on the journey of life towards You.

In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour. Amen.

Custom Built for the Long Haul
Scripture: Psalm 139:15–16

My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be."

1. You Aren't Off the Assembly Line—You're a Custom Build
Anyone who knows bikes knows the difference between a mass-produced stock motorcycle and a custom build. A custom bike has every weld intentionally placed, every part hand-selected, and a blueprint known inside and out by the builder.
The Connection: Psalm 139 says God wove you together. You aren't a mistake, a mass-production model, or trash on the side of the road. God personally welded your frame, tuned your heart, and designed you for a specific purpose.

2. The Route Was Mapped Before You Turned the Key
When you plan a long trip, you look at the map before kickstands go up. Verse 16 says all the days ordained for you were written in His book before one of them came to be.

The Connection: You might feel like you've taken some wrong turns, hit unexpected detours, or laid the bike down a few times in life. But God isn't surprised by the twists in your road. He already mapped out the route, and He holds your ultimate destination.

3. Riding with the Chief Road Captain
Out on the highway, trust in your Road Captain keeps the group safe. They see the hazards ahead before you do.

The Application: If God built your frame and wrote your route, hand Him the handlebars. Stop trying to ride solo through the storms. Let the One who designed you lead the pack.
