Newry Canal Oktoberfest 2018
Saturday & Sunday saw the annual Oktoberfest on Newry Canal, an event that marks the end of the open matches run by the Newry Canal Match Group. The event this year was shortened to 2 days due to storm Callum.
Day 1 proved to be extremely wet but this didn’t affect the fishing as big fish showed up in numbers on the Rocks section, leading to great weights for some anglers. Leading the charge was the current King of the Canal Damien Maddocks, with an impressive 20.040kg of Bream, Hybrids, Roach and Perch. Second on the day was Belfast man Jimmy Douglas with a similar next of fish but weighing 16.810kg, third on the day was Johnny Keith with 16.010kg. Alin Apahidean took 4th place with 13.520kg from the Boats section and Meeky Cummings finished in 5th spot with 12.150kg also from the Boats.
Day 2 was like a totally different venue. Bright sunshine and a flat calm canal didn’t bode well for those hoping for Bream. As it turned out big fish did show up but this time in Johnny Keith’s peg on the Boats section. Never one to make any mistakes Johnny put together a fine net of Hybrids, Skimmers and Roach to weigh an impressive 21.020kg and took the winners spot on the day followed by Philip Jackson who put a bad 1st day behind him to place a fine net of small fish , taken from Rocks section, on the scales for 17.000kg. Alin Apahidean took 3rd spot, again from the Rocks, with 16.100kg. Jim Rush took 4th spot with 10.960kg, and local man Kevin Maguire finished in 5th with 9.970kg.
Overall Johnny Keith took the title with a 2 day total of 27.030kg, Alin Apahidean moves up to 2nd with 29.620kg, Damien Maddocks slipped from over night leader to finish 3rd on 27.800kg, and Jimmy Douglas hung on to finish 4th with 23.010kg.
So that’s the opens finished up for another year on the Canal, we will be back in the spring and look forward to seeing some new faces. We would like to thank Newry, Mourne and Down District Council for all their help in staging our events, Loughs Agency as always for their continued support, all the anglers who have supported us this year and everybody else who has helped in any way.
Our 2019 calendar of events will be released in the new year.
