Newry Canal Oktoberfest 2018

Saturday & Sunday saw the annual Oktoberfest on Newry Canal, an event that marks the end of the open matches run by the Newry Canal Match Group. The event this year was shortened to 2 days due to storm Callum.

Day 1 proved to be extremely wet but this didn’t affect the fishing as big fish showed up in numbers on the Rocks section, leading to great weights for some anglers. Leading the charge was the current King of the Canal Damien Maddocks, with an impressive 20.040kg of Bream, Hybrids, Roach and Perch. Second on the day was Belfast man Jimmy Douglas with a similar next of fish but weighing 16.810kg, third on the day was Johnny Keith with 16.010kg. Alin Apahidean took 4th place with 13.520kg from the Boats section and Meeky Cummings finished in 5th spot with 12.150kg also from the Boats.

Day 2 was like a totally different venue. Bright sunshine and a flat calm canal didn’t bode well for those hoping for Bream. As it turned out big fish did show up but this time in Johnny Keith’s peg on the Boats section. Never one to make any mistakes Johnny put together a fine net of Hybrids, Skimmers and Roach to weigh an impressive 21.020kg and took the winners spot on the day followed by Philip Jackson who put a bad 1st day behind him to place a fine net of small fish , taken from Rocks section, on the scales for 17.000kg. Alin Apahidean took 3rd spot, again from the Rocks, with 16.100kg. Jim Rush took 4th spot with 10.960kg, and local man Kevin Maguire finished in 5th with 9.970kg.

Overall Johnny Keith took the title with a 2 day total of 27.030kg, Alin Apahidean moves up to 2nd with 29.620kg, Damien Maddocks slipped from over night leader to finish 3rd on 27.800kg, and Jimmy Douglas hung on to finish 4th with 23.010kg.

So that’s the opens finished up for another year on the Canal, we will be back in the spring and look forward to seeing some new faces. We would like to thank Newry, Mourne and Down District Council for all their help in staging our events, Loughs Agency as always for their continued support, all the anglers who have supported us this year and everybody else who has helped in any way.

Our 2019 calendar of events will be released in the new year.

Attention Anglers

Following extensive consultation with Frank Mitchell, Bara Best, Angie Philips and Celia Daly, and given the yellow weather warning for Friday, in the interest of everyone’s safety the Oktoberfest will revert to a 2 dayer for this year.

We will not fish on Friday , Saturday and Sunday only.

We do this very reluctantly but it is with everyone’s safety in mind.

If anyone else now wishes to fish please let us know.

Once again not an easy decision to make but for the sake of those ordering bait and sorting out days off we have to make the call now.

Newry Canal Oktober Fest 2016

Report

Well what a few days that was on the Canal !

The anglers gathered at the gates to the Middle Bank on Thursday morning in the hope that the Canal would provide the type of sport we have been used to of late. Results from the 3 rounds of the Winter Leagues had been good and we all expected that we would not be disappointed. The draw for rotation was made and we all made our way to the pegs to begin what would prove to be an epic few days on the Canal. Expectations were that it would take around 75 to 80lb to win the festival, how wrong we were.
Weather on the 1st day was brilliant, sunshine and short sleeves were the order of the day and it made for very pleasant conditions.
At the all out on Thursday the bank was buzzing as to how the Canal had fished and the weights were fantastic to say the least.
Jason Lunt 43lb 4oz, Philip Jackson 37lb 3oz and Geoff Quinn 31lb 2oz, what a start and with 4 other weights over 20lb, it was looking good for the rest of the week.
Friday came and the expectations were high, however the festival organisers were a little wary in case the Canal might switch off after the bumper 1st day. Their fears were short lived as the Canal was fishing unbelievably well. At the all out the top 3 were Johnny Keith 45lb, Philip Jackson 38lb 10oz and Jim McAllister 32lb 5oz, and again there were 4 other weights over the 20lb mark. This meant that early predictions of 75lb to win it had been blown away already.
Saturday came and so did the rain, it emptied out of the heavens from 10 o'clock to around lunchtime but yet again the Canal threw up some fantastic weights, Johnny McKinley 31lb 8oz and incredibly Philip Jackson and Johnny Keith both on 23lb 10oz from neighbouring pegs.
Sunday morning arrived and with only 4oz between the leading pair it was going to be anybody's title.
Heavy over night rain did take it's toll on the Canal but having said that the weights were still very good. Johnny McKinley took the spoils with 27lb 9oz, that man Philip Jackson on 26lb 3oz and Jim McAllister with 25lb 11oz.
That result meant that Philip Jackson ran out the winner on an incredible 125lb 10oz, Johnny Keith just held onto 2nd spot with 110lb 15oz, and despite a brilliant late run Johnny McKinley came up just short with 110lb 7oz for the 3rd place spot.
What an absolutely brilliant few days on the Canal, the fishing was better than we expected with all the top 5 anglers having more than 90lb.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank Loughs Agency for their generous sponsorship of this event through the Sustainable Development Fund. Our thanks to Newry Mourne and Down District Council for their co-operation in running the festival, Mac A Tackle and Boats for their fresh bait delivery to the draw on Thursday morning
We would like to thank all the anglers who took part in the even,N without your continued support these things would not happen, and a special word of thanks to everyone who helped with the weighing, pe***ng, draw and presentation.
Plans are already well advanced for next years event which after this year should prove to be very popular.
This event has once again proved what a fantastic match venue Newry Canal really is.

Newry Canal Oktober Fest

Day 4 Result

Well what a day it turned out to be. Heavy and persistent over night rain, and flooded roads this morning had threatened to have an impact on the last day of the festival.
The draw was made in non stop rain, and this lasted up until the all in, however as the rain eased the wind began to gust and this lead to tricky conditions for all the anglers.
At the all out the anglers that were able to best cope with the conditions came out on top.
1st on the day was the ever reliable Johnny McKinley with 27lb 9oz, next as every day this week was Philip Jackson on 26lb 3oz and 3rd was Jim McAllister on 25lb 11oz.
In the overalls Philip Jackson pulled away from the field with a fantastic 4 day total of 125lb 10oz, Johnny Keith clung on to take 2nd with a combined weight of 110lb 15oz and Johnny McKinley made a last minute charge but came up just short on 110lb 7oz for 3rd overall.
