Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath (1970)
Blues Rock / Hard Rock / Heavy Metal
The first entry in a big list of things we may play in a couple of months. Start with the behemoth, and game changer of all rock music, the mighty Black Sabbath debut. Highly innovative and distinct from the work of their peers, Black Sabbath took the hard, bluesy driving rhythms of heavy psych and blues rock and, with a little bit of extra sauce, released a genre defining album. Black Sabbath's signature doom laden sound was achieved in part by accident, as guitarist Tony Iommi had to tune his guitar slightly lower to compensate for his finger prosthetics, due to a factory accident.
Aptly timed for a 1970 released, at the start of a decade where rock music was taking a darker approach in general, Black Sabbath sets the tone, opening with the thunderous self titled track (Black Sabbath, by Black Sabbath from the album Black Sabbath), the ringing of the cathedral church bells spells it out that this is not walking in step with many of their big named contemporaries. Favouring menacing and brooding tone over blues swagger, the band favoured an ominous feeling.
Post release appraisal also makes not of not only did it lay down the foundation for the heavy metal scene going forward, but it also zeroed in on the doom, stoner and sludge scenes as well. With many modern bands seeking to emulate and evolved that original proto-doom sound, such as Electric Wizard who wear their Black Sabbath worship on their sleeves
The album has an enduring legacy as one of the most important releases of British music in the 1970s, and the start of what is possibly the greatest consecutive 4 album run in all of rock music
Sabbath always has a place in the Freak Out playlist
