Cobbled Haze Club will once again bring to life BACK SEAT BETTY for the Greater Manchester Fringe Festival at Joshua Brooks bar from 1 July to 3 July 2015 after appearances at the Play4Free Festival, LOST One Act Festival and The Kings Arms Salford Studio theatre. The play - written by up-and-coming writer Joshua Val Martin – takes a look into the world of Bethany, a Wythenshaw prostitute who cares for her garden as well as she does her clients and if anybody gets in the way of either, it sparks trouble. The show is raw, honest, brutal and funny, and you won’t forget your encounter with Betty in a hurry. This one-woman show will be performed by comedian and actor JO DAKIN who has appeared at the Royal Exchange Theatre in PESTS. Directing BACK SEAT BETTY is Artistic Director of Rumour Theatre Company Esther Dix whose previous work includes WHEN I FEEL LIKE CRAP I GOOGLE KIM KARDASHIAN FAT which performed to sell-out audiences at the Wonder Woman Festival 2015. Our recent award-winning play BACK SEAT BETTY opens THIS WEDNESDAY at Joshua Brooks, Manchester, 20:00.

See you there?

Here's the review we received from Paul Vale.

This new dramatic one-woman play negotiates a complex and unnerving psychological path. From the opening line, as our anti-heroine Betty ominously lights candles about the stage, we realise that this story is unlikely to end happily.

In fact, Joshua Val Martin's tale is both terrifying and engrossing.

Betty's moral compass is off the scale and yet it's the sheer ordinariness of her life, as she explains it, that sheds light on this dark story. The characters she describes and the clients that she entertains provide occasional and necessary humour but as the truth of the situation gradually evolves we realise that Betty is profoundly, psychologically damaged.

Writing aside, the performance by Joanne Dakin is exceptional. Dakin's Betty is proud, pragmatic and presents a dominating and surprisingly physical stage presence but when the mood of the piece changes, we are almost too frightened to look away in case she pounces.

Gripping stuff!

WHO WANTS TO BE IN A PLAY?
PLAYS PLAYS PLAYS

Looking for a female performer, ideally in her twenties, and age 30+ male performer in drag to perform in a one-off performance of the play UNION. Both need to be flexible over the next three weeks.

This performance is supported by Bury Council Le***an, Gay Bisexual and Transgender Employee Group and will be performed on 27th February 2015, Bury Met.

Performance on a profit-share basis.

Synopsis of UNION.

“It's 4am and Union pub drag queen Gloria is off her nut talking to hallucination Cilla Black when she spots a dead body in the canal. She recognises the face... but who is it? Four darkly funny stories follow from the people who lived and worked at the Union pub which culminate to answer who is in the canal and question what it means to be a community”

Praise for UNION.

“Brought tears to my eyes… A brave, fresh new script, some wonderful performances, and a venue befitting this exciting new piece of work.” Tracey Lowe, The Good Review ★★★★

“Bold direction… fantastic use of the space… uncompromising and confident… good black comedy and a smattering of great one-liners.” Jo Beggs, The Public Reviews ★★★★

“A real roller coaster of emotion… a play that could stand the test of time… Union is real, it’s gritty, it’s unapologetic, and it’s definitely a play to catch if you find yourself suddenly North.” Dan Ellis, SoSoGay ★★★★
