Jackdaw Theatre

Jackdaw Theatre Jackdaw is led by Artistic Director Bethan Dear who is a writer, director, performer and theatre maker. Bethan cares about stories.

The company is now an open collective that works with the local community and professional artists. We employ new artists for each project that we run, create, produce or co-produce. Stories have the power to create or to destroy. The stories we tell ourselves about ourselves, the stories we are told about ourselves, the stories the world tells us, about one another. The stories our culture or soc

iety tell us, have a truly magical power. They are the difference between people feeling and living well, in peaceful harmony, with themselves, one another and the Earth. Or a world riddled with social inequality, injustice, poverty, oppression, violence, and war. In order to serve us well, all our collective and individual stories need to be regularly questioned, updated, re-written and re-told. Bethan is passionate about stories that remind us of our humanity.

I've been thinking lately about how much my work as an artist Bethan Dear...is fed, supported and sustained, by my friends, family and connections. I could never take the risks that I do, or push myself to the places that I want or need to go too, to do the work I want to do, without them. They are what fuel me, feed me, and catch me. And today I am feeling full of gratitude for all of the many, incredible and truly remarkable people I have in my life. What a gift it is, to be so loved and to love so many. The richest kind of abundance...I am also beginning to work on an idea for a new show that will be all about this; our connections and how much we need them and the people around us, our friends, family, and communities. So watch this space...for new work and new explorations this Summer. And in the meantime, what a great way to warm me up on the inside, on such a rainy WInters day...to look at all these great faces!

I have recently submitted an ACW application to take my solo show up to Edinburgh Fringe so that I can maybe fulfil a dream for this work; and take it to tour across the UK and overseas to Europe and other international destinations... Fingers and Toes are all crossed. Me and this project have what....
