We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Sonny Rollins, the legendary “Saxophone Colossus,” at the age of 95.

This poster marks the first concert we ever presented with him in 1993, when he performed on the set of Miss Saigon. The theatre crew were so taken with him that they even flew him around in the stage helicopter after soundcheck.

From that moment on, Serious went on to present all his UK appearances, including performances at the London Palladium and the Royal Festival Hall, before he ultimately found a natural home at the Barbican, where he returned many times over the years.

In 2010, Sonny delivered a truly unforgettable, career-spanning performance at the EFG London Jazz Festival, marking his 80th birthday with a spellbinding, uninterrupted two-hour set at the Barbican. It was a performance of remarkable stamina, invention, and joy - a vivid reminder of why he stands among the greatest jazz musicians of all time.

He had been due to return to the Festival in 2013 for a headline appearance at the Royal Albert Hall, but was sadly forced to cancel due to illness. While that concert never took place, his 2010 performance remains firmly etched in the memory of all who were there.

A towering figure in jazz history, Sonny Rollins inspired generations of musicians and listeners through his fearless improvisation, boundless creativity, and unmistakable voice on the saxophone.

Thank you for the music, the innovation, and the inspiration.

Last week, a “Grammy-bound supergroup” filled the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall for their biggest performance yet, as guitarist and composer Julian Lage took the stage with his quartet: longtime collaborator Jorge Roeder on bass, drummer Kenny Wollesen, and keyboard virtuoso John Medeski.

“It was fascinating to hear how this quartet works in a spirit of complete empathy to create and build intensity and heft, always to be moving towards a different mood or vibe. Having heard groups led by Lage in much smaller spaces (the Vortex in 2011 and Pizza Express in 2018 in particular stay vividly in the mind) it was a joy to hear the group creating an experience which absolutely worked in a hall seating 2,700 people.” - ArtDesk (★ ★ ★ ★)
