Female Choreographers Collective

Female Choreographers Collective The Female Choreographers Collective endeavour to promote, support and build the profile of female choreographers in the UK.

In recent years it has been a recurring topic of discussion in Modern Dance; In an industry that is predominately female and in an art form pioneered by women ....Where are all the female choreographers? In a response to the dwindling number of female choreographers receiving regular funding or support in the same league as their male counterparts we feel compelled to take positive action. Therefo

re we would like to introduce to you the FCC – The Female Choreographers Collective. The sole purpose and mission of this collective is to support, encourage and spearhead work created by female choreographers across the UK. We seek to make contact with all female choreographers in the UK and organise forums, networking opportunities and platforms to showcase the abundance of female talent currently creating work. We are also committed to investigating the reasons behind this shift, and we plan to call on all female choreographers that are interested in highlighting this issue to share with us their experiences being a female choreographer in the modern dance industry today. This issue has been discussed sporadically over the last few years, with Dance Umbrella hosting a forum on the topic in 2009. In this heated debate everything from childcare to sexualisation and ego of the male choreographer were thrown into the arena. Betsy Gregory, artistic director of the contemporary dance festival Dance Umbrella, said: "There are loads of women making work. So why are they not progressing? ... I can't offer answers, but it could be around women having other creative drives in their lives, like family’

We currently have only theories and no clear answers on why this shift has happened, but we are passionate about investigating it further with the support of female choreographers around the UK. We hope that by sharing our experiences and concerns we can take affirmative action in giving female choreographers the opportunity to stand alongside their male counterparts gaining higher profile choreographic commissions and opportunities.

Audition Notice

Holly Noble Dance is looking for new cast members for her up coming production ‘Snow” which is supported by Arts Council England, Dance East, PDSW and Deda Derby.

Snow is based on the Brothers Grimm version of Snow White and will be set in a Victorian travelling circus. This production will combine a number of elements including film, narration, circus, ballet and audience interaction. Alongside this the production will be accessible for the deaf community with BSL and captioning throughout the performance.

We are looking for strong, expressive dancers with solid ballet and contemporary technique who are open to an exciting and collaborative creation period. Ladies will be required to have strong pointe work and all cast members will need extensive partnering skills across a range of styles. You will need to be open to learning new skills for this production such as circus based skills and basic BSL. There should be a willingness to experiment and discover and be part of a team that brings Snow to life.

*Performance Opportunity*

I am looking for an independent classical choreographer to join Assembled Artists for a showcase on 13th September at The Hospital Club.

The piece must be influenced by ballet and be between 12-15 minutes long. This is an intimate space and the theme of the work is Up Close & Personal. The piece needs to invite the audience in, not keep them on the periphery. We are keen to break down the notion of ballet and the idea of the 4th wall, making the work more accessible to the audience.

Please note this is an unpaid performance as this is a networking and showcase event. The space and time of the venue has also been given in kind.

We are open to what type of performance you want to present and it can include live music, photography, spoken word etc.

If you are interested in taking part, please email [email protected] with a brief outline of the work you wish to present, the length of the piece and videos to previous work.

Thanks!
Holly

Dear friends,

Firstly hello and apologies for the radio silence! Its been an eventful couple of years as I had twins and embarked on a Masters. Jane made the decision to move into the commercial sector and is building an incredibly successful career producing and choreographing events. Because of this Jane has decided to step down from her role at the FCC but will continue to support us as much as she can.

Although the FCC hasn't been very active over the last couple of years, I have stayed very much involved in the conversation and have continued to take part in discussions and events around the gender disparity still very present in the arts.

I do believe there has been a change, especially within the contemporary world, but I think we still have much to address and much to change and I hope by relaunching the FCC we can contribute in some way to making this happen. My aim is still to promote and support women in the arts and make audiences aware of women's achievements and creativity.

As part of that commitment, I am going to begin collating a detailed list of female choreographers within the UK and what their specialisms are. I don't think people realise how many women choreographers there are and what genres they work across and it would be great to have a comprehensive list that can the be put on to the FCC website, for people to easily access. I would be greatful for people's input on this if you wish to share your details.

Lastly, the FCC page is still active so I encourage you to utilise that page as much as possible. Please feel free to post performances, auditions, information, workshops, classes etc on there and comment as much as possible. The website should also be up and running again soon.

Please do get in touch should you wish to talk further, and do let me know if there is any information you would like to share. I do hope you will engage on this issue with me as you did previously,

Thanks for reading!
