Back in 2008 we launched the Real Food Festival as a massive celebration and coming together of people who cared about food and how it was produced and wanted to make things better.

That event, and everything we have done since was directly inspired by Carlo Petrini and the philosophy he articulated through Slow Food, and turned into a powerful global movement.

Yesterday this great man passed away, and we want to recognise not only the impact he had on us - both personal and through what we do through Real Food - but how this one man, through his deep humanity, sharp intellect, charisma and unbridled vision, changed the conversation around food, and the whole food landscape.

It is difficult to overstate the change Carlin inspired and mobilised. Food is everything. It is elemental, It connects us to each other and the natural world. The way we think about food, provenance, sustainability, health, human rights, animal welfare, identity and cultural heritage… a lot of what today feels obvious and simply taken as received wisdom, was squarely and unapologetically put on the table by Carlo Petrini.

Many others also shared his views, had brilliant ideas and pushed the agenda to challenge and change the food system. Carlo Petrini, through his incredible ability to inspire and sheer conviction, was able to bring ideas together and -crucially- actually make them happen.

Real Food would simply not exist if it was not for Slow Food and Carlin. We had the great privilege of working with him, but more than that, we have the privilege and responsibility of taking his work forward, and keeping it alive.
