The Sun Apparatus Theatre Company

The Sun Apparatus Theatre Company We are a multi-national, all female, physical theatre company, which formed in 2013 at the Royal Central School of Speech & Drama in the UK.

The Sun Apparatus Theatre Company premiered its first work, 'Unprescribed', at Chelsea Theatre in London in August 2013. About 'Unprescribed':
'Unprescribed' invites its audience to a 'Centre' that proposes and explores various coping mechanisms for contemporary problems. Four performers bring modern society's fascination with structure, power, control, fear and obsession to the stage.

'Unprescri

bed' commences as the audience is invited into the theatre by Dr Blink, the leader of the 'Centre'. She invites the audience to "view our treatments, from the purifying room to the relaxation station." Patients and audience are encouraged to eradicate any 'abnormal' feelings of fear, anxiety or obsession. Dr Blink leads the patients through a series of exercises, assisted by her silent assistant. As the programme progresses, however, differences between what is real and what is surreal become increasingly blurred. Who really is this silent assistant, for example, and why is she wearing such an odd hat? Is she really so silent after all?

'Unprescribed' asks whether our fears, anxieties and obsessions can or even should be cured, and whether those in control are perhaps the ones most in need of treatment. The story is told through imaginative 'treatments', storytelling, comedy, song and dance.

'Unprescribed' was first shown as a work in progress at the Royal Central School of Speech & Drama in June 2013, and later premiered in its completed form at Chelsea Theatre in London on 10 August 2013. Core collaborators: Dana Etgar, Justina Kaminskaite, Sarah Kenney, Katherine Vince

I’ve been a mum for 18 months now and it’s been a rollercoaster of fun and chaos! When Tommy was five months old, we bought a one way ticket to Portugal and we’ve been traveling ever since. Maybe the fear of feeling that we lost our freedom made us buy that ticket.

Throughout this trip Sarah Kenney and I had these long zoom talks trying to understand what’s up with all this motherhood thing. So we wrote a little story, and then we realized we started writing a new show. And now we are here, In London. Trying to understand how to explain London to Tommy.

In the photo: on our way to rehearsal. The photo looks great! And that is the lie of social media because a second later Tommy was crying his ass off because he really wanted to get off the train, and we were so far away.

In a world where your child refuses to put on clothes, but also democracy is dying and global warming is at hand, how do you stay sane (or sane enough)?

Here is a picture of my sister and me sometime in the early nineties. I have my TV face on and am frustrated that Alice is clearly not taking morning cartoons seriously enough.

How would you regulate screen time for kids (or for yourself)?

Help us wrangle with this and other parenting dilemmas in “How to Explain This Messed-up World to Your Kids” New Adventures Festival.
