ADRIAN UTLEY JOINS LITTLEBIG
Best known as a founding member of Portishead, Utley has spent more than four decades following sound wherever it takes him. Guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer and inveterate experimenter, his work extends far beyond the band that made his name: through electronics, jazz, contemporary classical music, film scores, sound art and large-scale performance.
Along the way he has worked with artists including Aphex Twin, Jeff Beck, Fred Frith, Marianne Faithfull, Sparklehorse and Perfume Genius, while his own projects have ranged from massed Guitar Orchestras and Terry Riley’s In C to silent-film scores, installations and site-specific work.
What connects it all is Utley’s fascination with sound itself: old machines and unusual instruments, distortion and texture, composition and chance. Few musicians have moved so comfortably between the worlds of rock, electronic and experimental music — or left such a distinctive fingerprint on each.
