UK Garage was born in London’s melting pot — but Jamaican sound-system culture is written into its DNA. 🧬
As we celebrate Notting Hill Carnival’s 60th year, we honour the Caribbean communities whose culture, creativity and sound-system heritage have helped shape London’s musical identity.
From the bass weight and the selector, to the MC, the dubplate, the reload and the communal release when a tune lands — the connection is undeniable. Jamaican sound-system culture helped build the language, energy and infrastructure that generations of UK music have drawn from. ✨
Garage did not come from one place alone. It grew through a distinctly London mix of Jamaican and wider Caribbean influence, US garage house, soul and R&B, jungle, pirate radio and Black British creativity. 🎶
This is more than nostalgia. It is a living legacy… from Carnival to the dancefloor, from the sound system to the garage rave. 💚
