Kelli can't wait for the blind date her office mates have set her up with, until it turns out to be not quite as she expected. Mutually appalled, yet appallingly intrigued, they commence to challenge each other on both straight & gay women's culture, to find the common ground underneath in the search for love and identity. Formed whilst training by actors Lexi Rich and Talie Friel , Joined at the Hip is a young, innovative company whose mission is to bring real, complex female characters to the forefront of theatre. Joined at the Hip chose ‘Commencing’ as their final, self directed production for their degree, this was excitingly the UK premiere of the play. “quote from Laura”. They were then invited to perform at The International Youth Arts Festival; this will be the company’s third performance and their first time at The Camden Fringe. Written by award winning, American playwright Jane Shepard from her book “Kickass plays for Women”. Commencing tells the story of two women brought together by circumstance who begin to unravel issues raised for women in today’s society through love and laughter. After the 2002 report on the status of women in theatre it stated “stories about men are considered universal... while plays by women or even about them are perceived as less universal and less important” it seems this is still the case today “and “without burning our bras or throwing ourselves in front of a horse we would like to see iconic female characters more prominent in theatre”. Jane Shepard wrote ‘Commencing’ for this very reason, to prove that women in theatre can have something interesting to say. Discussing past relationships, sexual promiscuity, gender inequality and gay persecution ‘Commencing’s’ clever, witty writing and larger than life characters is a play for anyone who likes to see a play with females that “kicks ass”.
