News Section: The Challenges of Democracy

How fragile is democracy?

In this News Section, former Supreme Court judge and author Lord Jonathan Sumption examines the forces putting democratic institutions under increasing strain - from weakening global alliances and the growing influence of billionaires to the erosion of political norms and legal safeguards.

Looking across the US, UK and beyond, Jonathan explores how money, influence and political power can reshape democratic structures, the warning signs we should be paying attention to, and what happens when institutions we once considered unshakable begin to weaken.

An urgent and thought-provoking conversation about power, accountability and the future of democracy.

Lifestyle Section: How Cold Water Heals

Can two minutes in cold water really change how we feel?

In this Lifestyle Section, cold water coach Gilly McArthur shares her experience working on the largest randomised NHS trial of its kind, exploring cold water swimming as an intervention for depression.

Across 17 locations in England, complete beginners have been gradually introduced to the water - sometimes starting with simply reaching the shore, then dipping their feet in, before building the confidence to swim.

Gilly explores why the benefits may have as much to do with breath, community and our connection to the natural world as the cold itself - and why longer, tougher swims aren't necessarily better.

From founding Blue Mind Men to her own return to cold water following a serious climbing accident, this is a hopeful conversation about resilience, belonging and the simple power of getting outside.
