Just in case you're looking for somewhere a bit cooler to hang out this weekend, Lord Scrope's Household will be in residence at Bolton Castle again, showing what daily life looked like in 1588. We'll be doing Bill drill and archery (and there's an opportunity to have a go as well!). There is also a twice daily birds of prey display, as well as a family of wild boar, all for the regular admission price!

Today is the anniversary of the Battle of Towton, fought on a bitterly cold 29th March 1461.

I created my well-known large oil painting of the battle in 2002 after a visit to the battlefield on the anniversary that year in the company of a group of archers – my recollections are of seeing the strength and technique required to shoot these powerful bows, and being really cold despite layers of warm clothing!

This painting is available as a print – on paper and a special canvas edition – and as a card. See my Studio88 website for details of this and all my Towton prints (see comments)
