Lewes Festival of Song

We’re fast approaching our first concert of the year, “Sweet Light of the Muse”, with tenor Nicholas Mulroy and pianist Nancy Cooley.
Both of the major song-cycles in the programme were inspired by new loves: Fauré’s La Bonne Chanson is the composer’s most rapturous outpouring of passion, with Emma Bardac his muse. Britten’s Seven Sonnets of Michelangelo mark the start of his life-long artistic and personal relationship with Peter Pears, to whom the cycle is dedicated.

The programme also includes Fauré’s triptych Poème d’un jour, three Shakespeare settings by Finzi, and more English songs.

Sunday 5th July at 6pm, St. Anne’s Church, Lewes.

Our next event is for Friends, and potential Friends,
on 28 April in Lewes at Valentine Voice Care.
Our artistic directors, Nancy Cooley and Lee Bisset will perform a few songs (Rachmaninov, Liddell, Argento), talk a little about the 2026 Festival, there will be bubbly, nibbles and some mingling.

We are delighted to be continuing our collaboration with the this year. We offer both the winning singer and winning pianist (who might not be a duo) a concert at the Lewes Festival of Song. Our first concert last year, by and was exceptional, and we are looking forward to hearing last year’s winners and .piano in the Festival this year. Our second concert on 2 November at 6.30pm features:

Florian Störtz - winner of the 2023 International Handel Singing Competition, the Helmut Deutsch Song Competition and the Lili et Nadia Boulanger competition in Paris

and

Nancy Cooley who performs widely both in the UK and abroad with concerts for the BBC, Wigmore Hall, the South Bank and Sinfonia Smith Square.

Songs including Butterworth’s ‘On Bredon Hill and Other Works’, lieder by Alma and Gustav Mahler, Sibelius, Zemlinsky, Strauss, finishing with Lewes composer John Hawkin’s ‘Strange Bridge’.
