Unthinkable film festival UNTHINKABLE is a Hull-based film festival set up as a charity with the aim of giving back to the local creative community.

The fantastic Linda King - - one of Artist’s in Residence whose work was featured in last year’s WARM THE OUTSIDE POOL UP exhibition. She collaborated with her son Si - - for this experimental response to the theme.

TAKING STOCK (Duncan Cowles) UNTHINKABLE 2025 WINNER - TEAM’S CHOICE

The director of TAKING STOCK has given us some insight into the film that took home an award at last year’s festival - a sardonic documentary about the mundanity of creating stock footage, this short swiftly won over our team.

Duncan Cowles has created multiple short films which can all be found on his website duncancowles.com, and he’s currently working on his second feature documentary! We’ll be linking this film to our YouTube playlist shortly, so keep an eye out.

Last year, we put a bunch of boxes around the city and asked for your thoughts on Hull. This birthed the line ‘WARM THE OUTSIDE POOL UP’ which launched an entire exhibition of local artists’ creative, weird, and UNTHINKABLE responses at our 2025 festival at the fantastic HARI space. Now it’s time for round 2.

You’ll see the familiar boxes out and about again, plus some new red ones, so feel free to write your thoughts on HULL on a bit of scrap paper, receipt, shoelace - whatever you have to hand - for a chance to be the chosen line that generates Hull’s next RIGHT HERE, WRITE NOW exhibition.

Get thinking. You have until June.

You’ll see them in The New Clarence pub, Brew, Makerspace, plus a variety of leisure centres and other libraries.

SUBMISSIONS OPEN

Early bird submissions have now passed, and we're now into our regular pricing band.

This year's festival is gearing up to be a big one - venues are booked, events are scheduled, artists are creating, and we hope you're finishing up your editing and getting it ready to submit to UNTHINKABLE 2026 for a chance to be shown on the big screen and win a lovely prize.

If you haven't made a film yet, don't worry, you technically have until the very end of July to get one in. Not recommended, but we get that some people work under self-imposed pressure. Whatever floats your boat! Check out all our genre screenings below:

As always, if you have any questions then just DM the team on here, and if finance is an issue with entering then just let us know and we can sort something out. The submission fee goes straight back into the festival to keep us running, but we get that times are hard and your film is the most important thing right now.
