There is a particular kind of Sunday that only turns up in September. A proper chill first thing, the year just starting to turn, and the whole day feeling like something borrowed. We get a handful of them, and then they are gone.
So here are five small things, and you will notice that not one of them needs good weather.
One. Have your coffee in bed. Not carried downstairs and drunk standing up at the worktop. Properly in bed, with something to read and no intention of getting up for a while.
Two. Go for a walk anyway. The blackberries are at their best and the hedges are full. Wellies were invented for exactly this.
Three. Potter about outside. Not proper gardening. Ten minutes between the showers counts. You come in with soil under your fingernails, which I have always thought is the mark of a good afternoon.
Four. Have the first roast of the season. The first one is always the best one. Something to do with the oven being on again and the windows steaming up.
Five. Light the fire. Early. Before anybody actually needs it. That is the whole luxury of the thing.
Then bed far too early, feeling like you have had a proper weekend.
Save this one for next Sunday. Everything here is hand made and carved at our workshop in Kent, and you can find it all through the link in our bio.

I don’t think I realised quite how clever they were until they were gone.

Last week we lost two people who have been there my whole life. King Harald of Norway and Dolly Parton. I don’t suppose their paths ever crossed, and yet in the days since, what we’ve been left with in both cases is the same thing. Their words.

Read them side by side and the philosophies are strangely alike. Be kind to other people. Be kind to yourself. I’m sure they’d both be rather pleased to know the effect those words are having now, and my hope is that it lasts.

That’s the whole reason we carve, really. A sentence said out loud is gone by the evening. The same sentence cut into oak is still there twenty years later, gone silver in the weather, still saying it.

My own answer is on the last slide. So now yours. If someone carved one line of yours into a piece of oak, what would you want it to say?

Will this work?

There is a chance, right, that this might just be two brilliant ideas. What do you think?

Anybody tried it before?

The people who make our rope also make the rope for HMS Victory. I originally simply chose it because it looks so good with oak… I was lucky, because there is so much more to it.

It comes from The Historic Dockyard Chatham Master Ropemakers at Chatham, at the other end of Kent from us. Rope has been made on that site since 1618, in a ropewalk a quarter of a mile long, and it is the only original Royal Navy ropeyard still working.

It’s Manila, from abaca, which resists water and rot naturally with no treatment at all. That is why your swing doesn’t need bringing in for winter. It is why you can’t damage the rope handle on your chopping board when you wash it with soap and water… This rope was made for stormy weathers!

There is a great deal of history in our rope, and that is another reason why it is so fantastic in the doorstops you commission to be part of your story!

As you can see there are also many words of wisdom coming from rope and knots…

Like “When you reach the end of your rope, tie a knot in it and hang on.”Save this for whoever needs telling.
