We loved catching up with Theo, one of last year’s Young Photographer Competition winners, and hearing what being part of photoILKLEY meant to him.

The competition is such an important part of the festival: a chance to celebrate young people’s creativity, curiosity and way of seeing the world.

This year’s Young Photographer Competition is still open, but not for much longer. If you are aged 19 or under, you can submit up to three photographs for the chance to be part of photoILKLEY 2026.

Deadline: Wednesday 3 June 1 pm

Meet Nora, one of last year’s Young Photographer winners 📸

As photographers, we often feel more comfortable behind the camera than in front of it, but Nora did a brilliant job stepping into the spotlight to share her story.

Her advice is simple: have a go. Your pictures don’t have to be perfect.

Last year, young photographers showed us Ilkley through their eyes.

Now it’s your turn to tell us a story.
We want to see your photographs exploring people and place, wildlife and everyday life, gardens, rivers, trees, moorland, family, friendship, community, solitude, or emotion. We want to see how you respond to the theme.

We’re so excited to launch the photoILKLEY Young Photographer Competition 2026, open to everyone aged 19 and under.

This year’s theme is HUMAN:NATURE and we can’t wait to see how young people respond through their photographs.

Selected images will be shown as part of photoILKLEY 2026 this July at one of our trusted partners, Ilkley Manor House.

Entries are open now and the deadline is 3 June. Each participant may submit up to three photographs, and entries can be made across the following categories: Portrait, Wildlife, Architecture, Landscape, and Other.

I took this picture of Malak at Oastler market in Bradford, she was helping her mother Mariem out at her Tunisian cafe Frikasse.
This portrait was exhibited as part of my exhibition, Faces of Bradford: Then and now, and also for photoIlkley.
