Why did I start a plant-based business?
Before Christmas, I had a call with a potential investor. He asked me something no one had ever asked me before.
“Would you consider making dairy ice creams?”
I’m so glad he did. Because it made me realise, without a shadow of a doubt, that I would never make a dairy ice cream.
And here’s why.
✨ Health
In Ayurveda, the cow is sacred. Dairy was considered one of the most nourishing foods on earth. But that was before industrialisation. Today, the majority of dairy cows are kept in conditions that would be unrecognisable to our ancestors. Hormones, antibiotics, confinement. The product looks the same. But it isn’t.
I believe food should nourish. So I made a decision to build something that could, without compromise.
🌿 The planet
We use oat milk as our base. And we’re proud of that choice.
Oat milk emits 70% less carbon than dairy per litre, and uses more than 90% less water. Choosing plant-based isn’t about perfection. It’s about making better choices where we can. And oats are a pretty beautiful place to start.
💛 Inclusivity
This one is personal. Moonji exists because I wanted to make something everyone could sit down and enjoy together. Dairy-free, gluten-free, refined sugar-free. Not “free from” as a consolation prize. Free from, and still extraordinary.
We are a plant-based business not because it’s a trend. But because it’s the right thing to make.
