Folkestone Women's Forum

Folkestone Women's Forum Take Up Space Festival March 6th-10th 2024 - book event tickets now ! FWF is a feminist organization with community, collaboration, and connection at our core.

We run a free monthly evening event open to people of all genders, across ages, social groups, and the political spectrum, where we meet to discuss our interests, work, passions, experiences - often with a speaker who we'll advertise in advance. We also support other satellite events (book discussions, walks, meals out etc) organized by our members. What happens? Each forum is free, we don't have

tickets. We gather from 7 in the Quarterhouse Clearing (upstairs bar space). Talks are always interactive and allow for mediated discussion. The space is freely given by the Quarterhouse. Young people aged 11+ are generally welcome to come with an accompanying adult, though we may amend this for specific events with a more adult theme. Babies are always welcome. FWF is run by local volunteers Catherine Sangster and Katy Lockey. Please email [email protected] if you'd like to get involved, help organize, suggest a speaker, or offer to speak yourself, or propose a satellite event.

🗓️OCTOBER 10
 ⏰8pm
📍Kollectiv
Part of Flint & Clay Programme

Join us at Kollectiv  for the world premiere screening of a new video artwork by contemporary Czech-born artist Tereza Bušková as part of Folkestone Fringe’s Flint & Clay programme. This powerful film is the culmination of an international, folklore-inspired project that brought together communities across the UK and Czechia – from Folkestone to Birmingham and Brno – to confront and raise awareness of violence against women and girls.
Rooted in ritual and collective creativity, the project featured a series of empowering workshops and participatory processions. In Folkestone, Bušková joined forces with Take Up Space Festival and Folkestone Women’s Forum for a striking International Women’s Day procession. Local Czech, Slovak, Roma and British participants – including three ‘bread women’ clad in mirrored, bread-encrusted armour – took to the streets, carrying hand-crafted totems charged with symbolism and strength.
These surreal, defiant images were born out of community baking and making sessions with women and non-binary people – setting the tone for a project that fuses myth, magic and social action.

The screening will be followed by a discussion between Bušková and project curator Dr Nicola Baird and an audience Q & A.
