Community Pays Tribute to 50 Years of Service at America Hall, Pinhoe
After an extraordinary 50 years of dedicated service, Angela Roberts has retired from her role as Secretary of America Hall, Pinhoe’s community centre, marking the end of an era for one of Exeter’s most valued local venues.
America Hall, situated in the heart of Pinhoe, has been at the centre of community life for generations, hosting a wide range of clubs, classes, performances, celebrations and local events. For half a century, Angela has been a constant and reassuring presence behind the scenes, helping ensure the hall continued to serve residents reliably and warmly year after year.
Angela took on the role of secretary while raising a young family, and now retires as a proud grandmother to eight grandchildren, having dedicated much of her adult life to supporting the local community.
To mark this remarkable milestone, the committee and trustees of America Hall hosted a retirement celebration attended by past and present hirers of the hall, former and current committee members, trustees and caretakers. The gathering was a fitting tribute, reflecting the many relationships, memories and community connections nurtured through Angela’s long service.
Over the decades, Angela has been deeply involved in the day to day life of the hall, supporting numerous events and regular user groups that rely on America Hall as a welcoming, accessible and versatile venue. The hall continues to be used by a wide variety of local organisations, community groups and social activities, something Angela has helped sustain through her dedication and attention to detail.
Her contribution to Pinhoe extends well beyond America Hall. Angela has also served in the Parochial Church Council as secretary, Cycling Proficiency, Pinhoe Community Association, Rainbows and has been involved in the Pinhoe Pantomime for many years along with other various other local organisations, giving generous voluntary time across multiple aspects of village life and becoming a familiar and trusted figure in the community.
The celebration also highlighted the strong sense of continuity that characterises America Hall. When Angela first became secretary, the caretaker was Jess Broom; today, his grandson Alan Tancock now holds the role, bringing the story of the hall full circle and underlining its deep rooted family and community connections.
The committee and trustees expressed heartfelt thanks to Angela for her exceptional commitment, noting that her knowledge, reliability and calm presence will be greatly missed. They also wished the new secretary every success in taking on the role, supported by the strong foundations Angela has helped to build over the last five decades.
Angela’s legacy will continue to live on through the thriving community life of America Hall — a place she has helped care for, shape and support for over 50 years.
