Freya is an Edinburgh-based silver Boehm flute player and traditional composer specialising in Scottish and Irish traditional music. Her playing is rooted in the idioms, repertoire, and stylistic nuances of the tradition, shaped by long-term immersion, performance, and study.
In addition to flute, she plays fiddle, whistle, and clarinet, bringing a broad instrumental perspective to her musicianship and teaching.
Alongside performing and composing, Freya is an experienced and committed tutor with a strong focus on accessible, high-quality traditional music education. She teaches private lessons and works regularly with a range of organisations and programmes, including Comhaltas, Scots Music Group, Fèis Dhùn Èideann, Newcastle University, and the Youth Music Initiative. Her teaching practice supports learners of all ages and abilities, with an emphasis on developing strong fundamentals, stylistic understanding, and confidence within the tradition.
As a traditional composer, Freya writes tunes that sit naturally within Scottish and Irish forms while allowing space for personal voice and contemporary influence. Her work spans performance, education, and community settings, and she is particularly interested in sustaining and evolving traditional music through inclusive practice, collaboration, and creative engagement.
