It is aimed at young people 11+, and runs on Tuesday nights at The Theatre Royal, Dumfries, 16:00-18:00
Dumfries Youth Theatre focuses on new, original and contemporary pieces of performance which challenge the participant and the audience alike. The entire programme is centred on Young Actor Training which is built into the weekly workshops and provides participants with a safe environment to ex
plore themselves in a number of different ways. Participants will be guided through creative a process which increases imagination and develops confidence and self esteem. Participants also learn production skills such as stage/costume design as well as production and management skills. This training is all delivered by trained professionals who are passionate about Theatre and Performance in all its forms and the benefits it brings to young people. The company is regularly involved in the Big Burns Supper Festival. This is often through developing a performance and presenting during the festival and collaborating with a number of different industry professionals and performance groups from the town. One performance was broadcast to a global audience on the internet, as well as over 1200 people who were there on the night. The follow-up stand alone production, 'Mute' - an interactive MP3 show - was performed in June 2012. The company also took part in Connections 2015 which took them down to The Brewery Arts Centre, Kendall. The company received a standing ovation and great feedback. More recently the company performed 'What are they like?' as part of the Big Burns Supper festival 2017, which opened up all areas of Theatre Royal in an exploration of the parallels between the lives of teenagers and their parents. Dumfries Youth Theatre is led by Acting Leader- Graham Main with support from our Associate Artists, and Community Producer - Cara McNaught “This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone who has an interest in theatre and performance to come and get involved in a program that is unrivaled anywhere else.
