SOMETHING NEW FROM SATORI SCREEN

After fourteen years of film screenings under the Satori Screen banner, I'm trying something new - a film course!

I have teamed up with Nathan Lunn, director of Geordie's Film Class and author of the forthcoming book They Come from Planet Earth!, for a one-day course at QUAD - Derby looking at kaiju cinema.

Nathan will be leading participants through examples of the genre (and showing plenty of clips) with particular focus on how the films can be linked to environmental theories.

The day will end of a big screen showing of the 1999 film Gamera 3: Revenge Of Iris (PG), with all course attendees able to see the film for free. (You can come along to the film at QUAD's regular ticket prices if not on the course).

This course runs 1pm - 4:30pm on Saturday 8 August, with the film screening taking place at 5:45pm. I thought this would be a fantastic curtain raiser ahead of Godzilla-A-Go-Go 3: Godzilla-A-Go-Go Raids Again! and hopefully some of you do too!

Big thanks to everyone who came along to see Exit 8 at QUAD - Derby over the weekend. I'm always keen to hear what people think about what I have screened, so jump in the comments if you have any thoughts to share.

The next Satori Screen event is Satori Screen: Fudoh - The New Generation (18) on Friday 12 June at QUAD - Derby.

Fudoh is the utterly bonkers, gory and over-the-top teenage gangsters thriller made by Takashi Miike in 1996. I'm not aware of it ever screening in a UK cinema before (cannot swear to it though), so perhaps this is a 30 years late UK premiere?!

A man trapped in an endless sterile subway passageway sets out to find Exit 8. The rules of his quest are simple: do not overlook anything out of the ordinary. If you discover an anomaly, turn back immediately. If you don’t, carry on. Then leave from Exit 8. But even a single oversight will send him back to the beginning. Will he ever reach his goal and escape this infinite corridor?

Friday 12 June - Satori Screen: Fudoh - The New Generation (18)

Riki Fudoh is a high school student juggling academic work with a secret life operating as an underworld boss. As the leader of a group of larger than life, school-age assassins, Fudoh is waging a campaign of violence against the entire criminal underworld, as part of a revenge plot against his own father, a high-ranking Yakuza in his own right who was forced to murder Fudoh’s brother.

The daughter of Wang Wei is kidnapped and the corrupt police force have no interest in finding her. Wei sets out on a violent odyssey to ensure her return himself. He is aded by a journalist named Navin, whose wife has also vanished. Fuelled by a righteous fury – the two men ruthlessly track down the kidnappers and engage in a serious of brutal and spectacular martial arts smackdowns.

Saturday 22 August - Godzilla-A-Go-Go 3

A third day of screenings featuring Japan's greatest monster and a host of other fantastic creatures. Full details released in the next few weeks.
