Got to take a good look at the new S&K controller at ISRA worlds. The build quality is excellent, it has all the current features and custom silicone hook up wires that are thick but flex like a wet noddle. Did not get to test it because the track was taken down immediately after the ES24 main.

Just tested a PCB circuit modification to add anti-brake to the Czech Pro 2 controller. This modification only requires changes to the PCB in the handle. It currently is working just fine with the testing we have done to date. More testing and parts selection is required to complete this feature modification.

So there may yet be more value to squeeze out of your existing Pro 2. A dedicated controller for Production or F1 class use could be beneficial. Also not having to upgrade to a new controller with anti-brake is another benefit.

This could be a popular DIY modification project based on the number of existing Pro 2 and new Pro 2 compatible PCBs. I'll post all future information on this modification in the OpenEuroController group when it launches.

Anti-brake is not really braking at all. It is more like keeping your foot slightly on the throttle. Many ISRA racers now want to upgrade to controllers with the anti-brake feature.

In the ISRA production class the handout motors suffer with so much braking force that they are difficult to drive fast. Anti-brake allows the production cars to roll into the corners more smoothly, carry more speed through the corners and exit quicker.

Both Kobis and S&K build controllers with the anti-brake feature. Kobis is now on their 3rd revision of anti-brake. If you are planning to compete at the ISRA world championships you can’t go wrong with either of these two Latvian world class controllers.

2020 Latvia Track

Janis Nabokins has recently completed building the 2020 ISRA Worlds track and the initial assessments are that it is the finest flat track ever built. Janis is not using MDF for the track surface. He is using plywood of his own specifications. It is about 12 mm (0.4725) thick with more plies than usual. Janis has developed a slower routing feed rate that creates a finer slot groove finish than you would expect with plywood. I would assume that like marine plywood it has no voids. Janis has also improved the moisture resistance of the plywood.

Michael Landrud is the source of this information and drove the first slot car on this track. The track has about a 2 meters longer straightaway than the UK track and is significantly more technical. The story goes that both Lars and Michael stood on the bridge section and the track surface deflection was about 1 mm.

Thinking of creating a closed group focused on eurosport flat track controllers. Message me if you would be interested. Point being if you want a world class eurosport racing controller you have to build it yourself but you don't have to do it alone. I see many things the current batch of controllers leave unaddressed yet the cost is still over $1000 USD.

What I can say is that building a controller is both easier and more difficult than you would think.

I will share my motivation and goals for creating this focus group and ask that you share yours. For those of you with real interest I suggest you review my posts and notes on transistors, controllers and power supplies to gain some background. Some of these post are somewhat technical and others very mundane but they may help provide a foundation to structure your understanding and aid in collaboration.

Use a magnet to find the best BJT power transistors. The old manufacturing process used to build the most stable silicon for power transistors also used aluminum for the base plate and sometimes for the cap. The aluminum enables better heat transfer.

Keeping the temperature in smaller range allows the transistor output gain to be more consistent. Temperature changes causes output gain to move along the transistor's characteristic curve. It would be like a stereo amp where the sound level gets louder or softer based on temperature. Not what you want in a slot car controller.

Eurosport slot car controllers in general have pitiful heat sinks, fans and other issues with thermal design.

I have collected a few of the best NPN power transistors to be found. They will now be measured, matched in pairs and integrated into a few eurosport flat track prototype controllers. Dan Ruddock paired his transistors and the Czech controllers used paired transistors. The currently available Kobis and S&K controllers seem to be popular. Both of these have a soft feel but lack the fine mid-range attack that the dual transistor controllers exhibit.
