The Dig for Victory Show is a 1940s themed festival being held at the North Somerset Showground near Bristol. Our vision is to provide our local community with an affordable, family orientated weekend event to explore this turbulent yet thought-provoking period in our recent history. We will bring history alive and the generations together with a sense of nostalgia and pride - to learn, remember a

nd have fun. Come and celebrate the 'Best of British' and life in the 40s with re-enactors demonstrating what life was like in wartime Britain, an exhibition of over 25 original restored wartime vehicles, veterans sharing their stories, traditional craft demonstrations, locally-grown produce stalls, vintage clothing, farmyard animals, traditional fairground rides, a children's trail and much more....

This event is organised by the Shopland Collection and the Western Branch of the Invicta Military Vehicle Preservation Society, with the support of the North Somerset Agricultural Society and The Blitz Buddies.

The most fascinating part of history is the human stories……

Captain H. A. Packer, RN, Commanding Officer of HMS Warspite in August 1943.

As an Acting Sub-Lieutenant, Packer joined the new battleship HMS Warspite on February 22, 1915 and was trained as an Assistant Gunnery Officer. After the Battle of Jutland in 1916, Packer was mentioned in dispatches for firing 12 rounds (though all fell short of their target) at the line of German High Seas Fleet battleships under local control.

In the spring of 1943, Packer returned to the Warspite, now as her captain. Warspite was shelling Salerno on September 15, 1943 when a new German weapon, the Fritz X wireless guided bomb, was deployed, crashing through the decks and exploding in the boiler room. Captain Packer managed to bring the crippled ship, under tow, back to Malta and was once again mentioned in despatches. He has the rare honour of having been so honoured for his conduct on the same ship in two world wars.
