BRISTOL BACKYARD ULTRA 2027 IS NOW LIVE

Honestly… we’re still blown away by what happened this year.

What started as an idea turned into one of the best weekends we could’ve imagined. 100+ runners out on course, people battling through the night together, crews huddled round at basecamp, and a finish on Sunday morning that a lot of us won’t forget for a long time.

There was grit, suffering, laughter, hallucinations, people achieving things they never thought they could do — and somehow it all felt welcoming at the same time.

That’s exactly what we want Gravel & Grit to be.

The 2027 event page is now up, and we’d love to have you there — whether you’re coming back for more, trying a Backyard Ultra for the first time, or just curious about what all this “one more loop” nonsense is about.

We’ll be sharing loads over the next few months:

• behind the scenes planning
• runner stories
• training chat
• and probably a few questionable ultra running decisions

We’ll be back better than before, and we’ve booked the sunshine a year in advance this time. Bring your friends, bring your family, and help us to make the weekend even more special then before.

After biblical rain, 26 hours of running and a huge 108 miles - Jack was later crowned the winner, and only finisher, of Bristol’s first Backyard Ultra.

We asked runners what made the inaugural Bristol Backyard Ultra special.

We’ve had so much kind feedback, highlighting just how brilliant the running community is.

People pushed themselves hard out there, but felt supported the whole way round. Everyone that turned up made the weekend special, from runners and crew to volunteers and event staff.

That means everything to us.

And yes, there’s constructive feedback too. We’ll send some info out soon about how we aim to improve the event for next year. For now, we just feel privileged to a part of this.

Thank you for making the first Bristol Backyard Ultra feel like a family. ❤️

In 2026, we delivered proof of concept. The community showed up, battled through the rain, and partied into the night.

When it got dark, it got gritty. Runners continued dropping out, until yard 19. Finally we had three left. Yard 20 saw no dropouts. And yard 21. By 9am, the sun had risen, the mist had settled, and the community gathered around to watch , and battle it out on the 24th yard - running a staggering 100 miles. Heroic efforts all round, and by yard 26, the winner was crowned.

So what’s next?

Bristol Backyard Ultra 2027.

Tickets for the 2027 edition go live on Saturday 16th May at 9am - exclusively for returning participants. You guys were AMAZING, and we want to thank you for being part of the family from the start.

Somewhere between the rain, the sleep deprivation, and that beautiful misty sunrise… this happened.

Smiles everywhere.

For us, the best part of the weekend was the atmosphere you all created. The amount of positive feedback we’ve received about the community, support, inclusivity, and encouragement out on course has honestly been overwhelming.

People cheering on strangers.
Runners returning Sunday morning just to watch the finish unfold.
Crews helping other crews.
Volunteers going above and beyond.

That’s exactly what a Backyard supposed to be.

Bristol Backyard Ultra 2026

The year that an idea became a reality. 110 amazing people, and all their friends and family, came together to celebrate the Backyard format. And what a party it was!

In a weekend that saw sunshine and torrential rain, every single person showed up and did themselves proud. Without each and every one of you, this event could never have happened.

We’re still trying to get our heads around all the success of the weekend, but we already know we’ll be back next year.

We hope you enjoy a sneak peak at some highlights from the event.

Bibs have now arrived at your local shop. For those of you that are still looking to pick up some last minute essentials for race weekend, head in to the Up & Running shop to use your 15% off code, and collect your bib whilst you’re there!
