Mills is an artist and curator based in Berwick-upon-Tweed. Working across painting, collage, print and mixed media, her practice explores control: how it is exercised through class, politics, family histories and cultural symbols, and how it becomes internalised in everyday life.
Mills has her studio in the back rooms of Jackal Art Space on Hide Hill - marked as Venue 18 on the Berwick Open Studios Map; where visitors will also be able to discover Phil Rowe’s paintings, drawings and illustrations.
Visitors to Jackal can expect to see work examining the visible and invisible forces that influence how we see ourselves and others, questioning systems of power often accepted as natural.
“In 2023, after six years in the USA, Mills returned to the UK and settled in Berwick-upon-Tweed. Since arriving she has established both a pop-up art space and, later, Jackal, an independent art space supporting contemporary visual art, exhibitions and creative projects. Recent initiatives include the Women Making Art Reading Room, bringing Open Print Press to Northumberland for the first time, and curating the successful Pieces of Mind exhibition, which is now preparing to tour nationally.
Alongside her curatorial work, Mills continues to develop her own practice. Recent exhibitions include Hundred Heroines Museum, Oxford University Press, and Newcastle Contemporary Art. Her current work explores ideas of control through painting, collage and print."
