Whose seen one of these participating venue window stickers popping up in venue windows? 🪟

It’s so satisfying to see - and hopefully, along with our venue bunting, they will help you all find your way when you’re following the trail round the streets of Berwick at the end of the month, seeking out studios and galleries.

Don’t forget you can pick up a map from one of these locations, plus many shops, galleries and businesses in Berwick - there is a list on the pinned post on our account - and you download a version from the website too.

The Old Brewery Artist Studios Venue 23 on the map of Berwick Open Studios, and they are hosting a multitude of artists and creativity.

First off, the inaugural exhibition of the Benchmark Festival of Arts. Benchmark Festival of Arts is a celebration of Berwick and the lower reaches of the River Tweed through the eyes of Artists, Photographers and Sculptors, all master minded by Berwick local, James Herriot.

Secondly, they are kindly hosting three local artists who weren’t able to open their own studios for the Open Studios; Tuby, Sarah Curtis and Linda Calvert; each of these artists have their own in-depth posts (scroll back through our posts to see!) - and all three will be there over both weekends.

And thirdly, of course there will be several of The Old Brewery’s new artists in their brand new studios! Including:
Nadia Ho Brautaset -
Nadia is a multi-disciplinary artist and maker exploring heritage crafts with a conscious move towards sustainability.

David Green
Since our last post on David being at the Quayside, he has applied and been awarded one of the new studios - congratulations! David will have work in both locations during Open Studios.

James Chincharo
James is a Fine Art artist and ceramics educator whose practice spans ceramics, drawing and printmaking. His work is rooted in experimentation around themes of the constructed environment and the passage of the body.

Jo is a foraging artist and ink-maker, responding intuitively to the seasons and her local landscape through wild creativity. She paints with her handcrafted inks and pigments, creating works that are both oracle and devotion. Jo works closely with local wild plants and is inspired by human connections with the other-than-human world.

"In my work right now I am picking up threads - literally - from my past and gathering them into my recent projects and interests in ink and pigment making. My background was always textiles, naturally dyeing, hand stitching, printing and mark making, a bit like collage in fabrics, and in the last month I’ve found myself picking up fabric and trying my handmade inks on them. It’s really exciting because I don’t know where it’s going yet!"

Jo’s studio is at the Barracks Artist Studios - Venue 5 on the map - shared with Joel Arnstein. Both artists will be in their studio over both weekends of Berwick Open Studios.

"Being offered a studio space at Berwick Barracks Studios has been a significant step in the development of my practice. The studio has given me both the physical space and the permission to follow my curiosity wherever it leads, which often meanders with the seasons, what I'm noticing in Nature, or what plants there might be a glut of."

Sarah Curtis - local artist working in a variety of media including acrylic , collage and oil. Inspired by aerial views seen whilst piloting a microlight aircraft over the Scottish countryside and coast.

Sarah will be showing her work at Venue 23 - The Old Brewery Artist Studios in Tweedmouth over both weekends of Open Studios.

“Having lived in East Lothian all my life the landscape has always fascinated me. The mix of agricultural, coastal and moorland scenery makes for a really diverse and interesting county, especially from the air and I love to try and capture some of that in my work. The colours are dramatically affected by the changing seasons and the seasonal light in Scotland and I love to try and capture that.

Colour and mark making form the backbone to my work. I try to capture the sense of space and distance between me and the landscape viewed from an aerial perspective.

I pilot a microlight aircraft. Aerial photography along with the sensational views and feelings I get from flying far above the landscape allow me to distil what I see into shapes and colour from a unique perspective.

In addition to being an artist, I'm also a professional gardener and qualified florist so it makes sense that I love flowers as I spend most of my days surrounded by them. Floral paintings bring me joy to create and then create joy for the people who choose to but them for their home.”

Maria is an oil painter and ceramicist and has recently moved to Berwick upon Tweed. She paints from life, on location, working quickly to convey the light and feeling of a scene in the moment.

Come and see Maria painting ‘en plein air’ (wind speed permitting!) at the Artisan Quayside Huts - Venue 10 - both weekends of the Open Studios.

She will also show a selection of recent paintings (and some hand built ceramics) influenced by life on the beautiful Tweed Estuary.

Mills is an artist and curator based in Berwick-upon-Tweed. Working across painting, collage, print and mixed media, her practice explores control: how it is exercised through class, politics, family histories and cultural symbols, and how it becomes internalised in everyday life.

Mills has her studio in the back rooms of Jackal Art Space on Hide Hill - marked as Venue 18 on the Berwick Open Studios Map; where visitors will also be able to discover Phil Rowe’s paintings, drawings and illustrations.

Visitors to Jackal can expect to see work examining the visible and invisible forces that influence how we see ourselves and others, questioning systems of power often accepted as natural.

“In 2023, after six years in the USA, Mills returned to the UK and settled in Berwick-upon-Tweed. Since arriving she has established both a pop-up art space and, later, Jackal, an independent art space supporting contemporary visual art, exhibitions and creative projects. Recent initiatives include the Women Making Art Reading Room, bringing Open Print Press to Northumberland for the first time, and curating the successful Pieces of Mind exhibition, which is now preparing to tour nationally.

Alongside her curatorial work, Mills continues to develop her own practice. Recent exhibitions include Hundred Heroines Museum, Oxford University Press, and Newcastle Contemporary Art. Her current work explores ideas of control through painting, collage and print."
