Call for Volunteers - WayWORD Festival 2026

Want to gain new skills, meet like-minded people and be part of Aberdeen's cross-arts literary festival?

We're looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help make WayWORD Festival 2026 a success.

Whether you're looking for your first volunteering opportunity or already have experience, we'd love to hear from you.

Volunteer roles include:
* Steward
* Stage Support
* Front Desk Assistant
* Green Room Liaison

To volunteer, you'll need to:

* Be available during WayWORD Festival 2026
* Attend one in-person volunteer training session at the University of Aberdeen on Tuesday 29 September 2-4pm or Wednesday 30 September 6-8pm

The Ocean and the Bones is the brilliant new children’s book for 8-12 year olds (and the rest of us!) by award-winning writer Genevieve Carver. Hear Genevieve discuss and read from this heart-warming Stone Age adventure which has already been selected as one of The Times’ Children’s Books of the Week.

Friendship is tough in the Stone Age, especially when your best friend is part-Water Spirit… Ever since Little Meg was chosen as the Sunhealer’s Shadow, she has devoted herself to learning the ways of the Spirits. So when their anger sends a ferocious storm sweeping through her village, she fears it’s her fault. By keeping the bones she was meant to offer up to them, Meg has put her people in terrible danger. As the rain clears, Meg discovers a girl washed up on the shore, who speaks a strange language and scratches pictures in the sand. Little by little, the pair become friends. But if Meg wants to save her village, she must help the girl find her way home. Their perilous journey will take them across the wild sea, to a place that only exists in legends. Will Meg survive to tell the tale?

Genevieve Carver is part writer, part Water Spirit. She is the author of three books of poetry and has written and performed her work in locations including disused factories, uninhabited islands and offshore windfarms. She previously worked as an archaeologist and holds an MA in European Prehistory from the University of Sheffield. Genevieve now lives in Aberdeen, where she regularly immerses herself in the North Sea. The Ocean and the Bones is her first novel.
