Dear festival guests, dear friends, dear supporters
If there is one thing the pandemic has taught us, it is that things don't always turn out the way you think they will. Who would have thought that the virus and the pandemic would reach these heights and cause us such long-term restrictions?
Thus, for us too, things have turned out differently than expected. After having to cope with various situations since the beginning of the pandemic, we always hoped for a light at the end of the tunnel, especially when we announced in November of 2021 that we were in the middle of preparations for 2022 and that there would be another festival.
WITH A VERY HEAVY HEART, WE REGRET TO INFORM YOU THAT OUR HOPES FOR THE LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL HAS EXTINGUISHED.
In what follows, we want to explain our situation to you, and be completely transparent as to why our project has come to an end.
Looking Back
Our start in 2015 was really not easy and we had to struggle with huge deficits. Therefore, we had to take out a loan of roughly €90,000 during the first two years to keep the festival going. Only after the festival in 2019 did we no longer have losses, however, with all the income we had, we had to pay our loan installments. We want to emphasize that up until 2019, not one of the Monticule Festival organizers had received any money for their hard work and dedication. On the contrary, bills were always paid through private channels when money was tight. As for 2020, the prospects were positive for the first time: the festival was almost sold out by February, and we had nearly cut the debt from the loan in half by then. Unfortunately, for obvious reasons, the 2020 festival never took place. Since then, the loan could not be paid off any further, and remains to this day.
Since the beginning of the pandemic back in Spring of 2020, we refunded many tickets. At the same time, we were forced to postpone the festival again and again: From June 2020 to September 2020, from September 2020 to June 2021 and from June 2021 to June 2022. But every postponement costs a lot of money: service providers had to be paid, flights had to be booked, investments had to be made for the required infrastructure. At the same time, we as the organizers also have running costs such as rent for storage space, tax advice, insurance, and several other small expenses that add up. Therefore, we didn't have any income, on the contrary, we were refunding tickets.
In autumn 2021, we had everything in motion with a festival planned for June 2022. We were counting on selling some tickets during the winter months, like in previous years. Unfortunately, that didn't happen. We already had a lot of tickets circulating and for some people it was probably not quite clear if and how a festival could take place, what the travel regulations would look like until then or how the pandemic would develop. For many guests, we are not a festival just around the corner and due to being a smaller festival we also have always had to fight for every guest. Monticule depended on the people who were willing to undertake such a long journey and the idea of being able to move around Europe easily. But ever since the pandemic started, instead of selling tickets, more and more guests wanted their tickets refunded. To this day, this has not changed, and has caused our bank balance to decrease and drain.
Financial Situation
Ultimately, you can't organize a festival without income and money to work with. Unfortunately, the chance of receiving any financial help, such as cultural funding, is extremely limited for a festival like ours. As a German company with a festival in France, neither the German nor French state can offer us financial support; there is no cultural funding coming from Germany because the festival takes place in France; there is no French funding because we are a German company. The very last option would be to take out another large loan, which we would have to pay off with our private money over a very long period of time if - in the worst case - the plan were to fail for whatever reason. But in the current times, we neither want nor are we able to take this risk anymore.
For the reasons mentioned above and with an incredibly heavy heart, in the first week of February we filed for bankruptcy. Which means that the company will be liquidated and there will be no festival in 2022. A liquidator is going to decide about the further course of action.
What does this mean for you?
Some of you are probably wondering what will happen to your tickets. As for now, we do know that anyone who bought their ticket after 15.11.2021 will automatically get their money back, as it is still being held in the account of our ticket service provider. Unfortunately, we cannot make any definite statements regarding the rest of you who purchased tickets before 15.11.2021, as all further decisions have to be made within the liquidation process.
The last 7 years have been incredibly exciting, intense, and educational. Despite countless sleepless nights and numerous ups and downs, we still managed to get together five times at the Domaine de Gayfié. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the people who made Monticule Festival what it was. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts and we will never forget you!

Une chose que la pandémie nous a appris, c'est que les choses ne passent pas toujours comme on croyait; qui aurait pensé que le virus et la pandémie prendraient de telles proportions et nous imposeraient de telles restrictions à long terme?
Ainsi, pour nous aussi, les choses ne se passent pas comme prévu. Après avoir dû faire face aux situations les plus diverses depuis le début de la pandémie, il y a malgré tout toujours eu une lumière à l'horizon, notamment lorsque nous avons annoncé en novembre 2021 que nous étions dans les préparatifs pour 2022 et qu'il y aurait un autre festival.
MALHEUREUSEMENT, NOUS SOMMES DANS L’OBLIGATION DE VOUS ANNONCER QUE CETTE LUMIÈRE À L'HORIZON S'EST ÉTEINTE.
Ci-dessous, nous vous expliquons notre situation en toute transparence pourquoi nous devons malheureusement mettre fin à notre projet à ce moment-là.
Rétrospective
Après nos deux premières années à partir de 2015, nous avons eu un déficit d'environ 90 000 euros. Nous avons donc dû contracter un emprunt à ce montant pour pouvoir continuer le festival. Ce n'est qu'à partir de l'édition 2019 que nous n'avons plus eu de pertes, mais nous avons dû payer nos mensualités de crédit avec la totalité des recettes. Il est important pour nous de souligner que jusqu'en 2019, aucun des organisateurs du Monticule Festival n'a pas touché d'argent pour son travail. Au contraire, des factures ont toujours été payées en privé lorsque l'argent était rare. Pour l'année 2020, les perspectives étaient pour la première fois vraiment bonnes : le festival affichait déjà presque complet en février, et nous avions presque réduit de moitié la dette due au crédit à cette date. Malheureusement, pour des raisons que nous connaissons tous, le festival n'a jamais pu avoir lieu en 2020. Depuis lors, le crédit n'a pas pu être remboursé d’avantage, et il existe toujours.
Depuis le début de la pandémie au printemps 2020, nous avons remboursé de très nombreux billets. Parallèlement, nous avons dû reporter le festival à plusieurs reprises : De juin 2020 à septembre 2020, de septembre 2020 à juin 2021 et de juin 2021 à juin 2022. Mais chaque report coûte de l'argent : il a fallu payer des prestataires de services, réserver des voyages, investir dans l'infrastructure nécessaire. En tant qu'organisateurs, nous avons des frais courants comme la location d'un entrepôt, le conseil fiscal, les assurances et de nombreux petits montants. D'autre côté, nous n'avons pas eu de recettes, au contraire, nous avons remboursé des billets.
À l'automne 2021, nous avons tout mis en oeuvre pour repartir avec un festival en juin 2022. Nous comptions sur le fait que, comme les années précédentes, nous allions vendre quelques billets pendant les mois d'hiver. Malheureusement, cela ne s'est pas produit. Nous avions déjà beaucoup de billets en circulation et pour certains, il n'était certainement pas possible de prévoir si et comment un festival pourrait avoir lieu, quelles seraient les règles de voyage d'ici là, comment la pandémie évoluerait. Pour beaucoup d'invités, nous ne sommes pas un festival facile à accéder. Le Monticule a vécu sur la confiance des gens qui étaient prêts à entreprendre ce long voyage et sur l'idée de se déplacer facilement à travers l'Europe. Mais depuis le début de la pandémie, il y a eu plus de clients qui ont demandé le remboursement de leur billet que de nouveaux billets vendus. Cette situation n'a pas changé jusqu'à aujourd'hui et a fait fondre notre trésorerie.
Situation Financière
On ne peut pas organiser un festival sans recettes et sans argent pour travailler. Malheureusement, les perspectives d'aides financières, comme les subventions culturelles, sont également extrêmement limitées dans notre constellation : En tant qu'entreprise allemande avec un festival en France, ni l'État allemand ni l'État français ne peut nous soutenir ; il n'y a pas d'aide culturelle de l'Allemagne puisque le festival a lieu en France ; il n'y a pas d'aide française parce que nous sommes une entreprise allemande.
La dernière possibilité serait un autre crédit élevé que nous devrions, dans le pire des cas, si le plan ne devait pas aboutir pour quelque raison que ce soit, rembourser avec notre argent privé pendant des années. Nous ne voulons et ne pouvons plus prendre ce risque dans les circonstances actuelles.
Pour les raisons susmentionnées nous étions dans l’obligation à déposer le bilan la première semaine de février. Cela signifie que la société sera dissoute et qu'il n'y aura pas de festival en 2022. Un administrateur judiciaire décidera de la suite des événements.
Qu'est-ce que cela signifie pour vous ?
À ce moment, certains se demandent qu'il deviendra de leurs billets. Ce qui est sûr, c'est que tous les acheteurs à partir du 15.11.2021 seront automatiquement remboursés, avec l'argent qui est encore sur le compte de notre prestataire de services de billetterie. Malheureusement, pour une réponse à tous les autres, il faut attendre l’administrateur judiciaire qui sera en charge des comptes.
Les sept dernières années ont été incroyablement passionnantes, intenses et instructives. Malgré d'innombrables nuits blanches, de nombreux hauts et bas, nous avons tout de même réussi à nous réunir cinq fois au Domaine de Gayfié. Nous tenons à remercier ici toutes les personnes qui ont fait du Monticule ce qu'il était. Nous vous remercions de tout coeur et ne vous oublierons jamais.

wenn uns die Pandemie eine Sache gelehrt hat, dann, dass die Dinge nicht immer so kommen, wie man denkt. Wer hätte gedacht, dass das Virus und die Pandemie diese Ausmaße annimmt und uns derartig langfristige Einschränkungen beschert?
So kommen die Dinge auch für uns anders als geplant. Nachdem wir seit Beginn der Pandemie mit verschiedensten Situationen klarkommen mussten, gab es trotzdem immer wieder ein Licht am Horizont, nicht zuletzt als wir im November 2021 angekündigt haben, dass wir mitten in den Vorbereitungen für 2022 stecken und es ein weiteres Festival geben wird.
LEIDER MÜSSEN WIR EUCH MITTEILEN, DASS DIESES LICHT AM HORIZONT ERLOSCHEN IST.
Im Folgenden erklären wir euch unsere Situation, und möchten transparent erläutern, warum wir unser Projekt an dieser Stelle leider beenden müssen.
Rückblick:
Der Start im Juni 2015 war alles andere als einfach, und wir hatten mit sehr hohen Verlusten zu kämpfen. Somit mussten wir in den ersten zwei Jahren einen Kredit von ca. 90.000 Euro aufnehmen, um mit dem Festival fortfahren zu können. Erst mit der Edition 2019 hatten wir keine Verluste mehr, mussten aber von allen Einnahmen, die wir hatten, unsere Kreditraten bezahlen. Es ist uns wichtig zu betonen, dass bis 2019 keiner der Monticule Festival Organisatoren Geld für seine Arbeit erhalten hat. Im Gegenteil, es wurden immer wieder Rechnungen privat ausgelegt, wenn das Geld knapp war. Für das Jahr 2020 waren die Aussichten erstmals richtig gut: Das Festival war schon im Februar nahezu ausverkauft, die Schulden durch den Kredit hatten wir bis dahin fast halbiert. Leider hat das Festival 2020 aus uns allen bekannten Gründen nie stattfinden können. Der Kredit konnte seitdem nicht weiter abbezahlt werden, und besteht bis heute.
Seit Beginn der Pandemie im Frühjahr 2020 haben wir sehr viele Tickets erstattet. Gleichzeitig mussten wir das Festival immer wieder verschieben: Von Juni 2020 auf September 2020, von September 2020 auf Juni 2021 und von Juni 2021 auf Juni 2022. Doch jede Verschiebung kostet Geld: Dienstleister*innen mussten bezahlt werden, Reisen mussten gebucht werden und in die notwendige Infrastruktur musste investiert werden. Parallel haben wir als Veranstalter laufende Kosten wie Lagermiete, Steuerberatung, Versicherungen und viele Kleinbeträge. Auf der anderen Seite hatten wir keine Einnahmen, im Gegenteil, wir haben Tickets erstattet.
Im Herbst 2021 setzten wir alles in Bewegung, um wieder mit einem Festival im Juni 2022 an den Start zu gehen. Wir verließen uns darauf, dass wir wie in den Jahren zuvor über die Wintermonate einige Tickets verkaufen würden. Doch das ist bedauerlicherweise nicht passiert. Wir haben bereits viele Tickets im Umlauf gehabt und für einige war es sicher nicht absehbar, ob und wie ein Festival stattfinden kann, wie die Reise Regularien bis dahin aussehen, wie sich die Pandemie entwickelt. Wir sind für viele Gäst*innen kein leicht erreichbares Festival und wir haben auch aufgrund unserer Größe immer um jeden Gast kämpfen müssen. Das Monticule lebte vom Vertrauen der Menschen, die bereit waren diese lange Reise auf sich zu nehmen und der Idee, sich unkompliziert durch Europa zu bewegen. Doch seit Beginn der Pandemie wollten mehr Gäste ein Ticket erstattet haben, als neue Tickets verkauft wurden. Diese Situation hat sich bis heute nicht verändert und hat unseren Kontostand bis zuletzt schrumpfen lassen.
Finanzielle Situation:
Ohne Einnahmen und Geld zum Arbeiten kann man kein Festival organisieren. Leider sind die Aussichten auf finanzielle Hilfen, wie z.B. Kulturförderungen in unserer Konstellation ebenfalls äußerst beschränkt: Als deutsche Firma mit einem Festival in Frankreich kann uns weder der deutsche noch der französische Staat unterstützen; es gibt keine Kulturförderung aus Deutschland, da das Festival in Frankreich stattfindet; es gibt keine französische Unterstützung, weil wir als deutsche Firma agieren.
Die letzte Möglichkeit wäre ein weiterer hoher Kredit, den wir im schlimmsten Fall, wenn der Plan aus welchen Gründen auch immer nicht aufgehen sollte, mit unserem privaten Geld über Jahre abzahlen müssten. Dieses Risiko wollen und können wir in den aktuellen Zeiten nicht mehr eingehen.
Wir haben aus oben genannten Gründen und mit unglaublich schwerem Herzen in der ersten Februarwoche Insolvenz angemeldet. Das bedeutet, die Firma wird aufgelöst und es wird kein Festival im Jahr 2022 geben. Über das weitere Vorgehen wird nun ein*e Insolvenzverwalter*in entscheiden.
Was bedeutet das für euch?
An dieser Stelle fragt ihr euch sicherlich, wie es mit euren Tickets weitergeht. Was feststeht ist, dass alle Käufer ab dem 15.11.2021 automatisch ihr Geld zurückbekommen, da dieses noch auf dem Konto von unserem Ticket-Dienstleister parkt. Leider können wir heute für alle Käufer vor dem 15.11.2021 noch keine verbindliche Aussage treffen, da alle weiteren Entscheidungen von der Insolvenzverwaltung abhängig sind.
Die letzten 7 Jahre waren unglaublich aufregend, intensiv und lehrreich. Trotz unzähliger schlafloser Nächte, zahlreicher Höhen und Tiefen haben wir es dennoch fünf mal geschafft, auf der Domaine de Gayfié zusammenzukommen. Wir möchten an dieser Stelle allen Menschen danken, die das Monticule zu dem gemacht haben, was es war. Wir danken euch von ganzem Herzen, und werden euch nie vergessen!
