Estonian-Finnish "Uralcore" band peforming music of Finno-Ugric peoples Kännu Peal Käbi and the partly overlapping Hõimulõimed youth organisation will be among the European participants of the Juhannus Summer Solstice Celebration in Hancock. We expect both groups to make a strong contribution to the cultural and intellectual programme of this exceptional Finno-Ugric festival in North America!

Hõimulõimed ja Kännu Peal Käbi sõidavad sel suvel Juhannuse jaanitulele Hancockis, Michiganis! 🔥

Juhannuse pidustus Hancockis on tugevalt seotud kohaliku soome kogukonna ja pärandiga. Kuna Hancock kannab 2026. aastal soome-ugri kultuuripealinna tiitlit, pööratakse tänavu rohkem tähelepanu ka laiemale soome-ugri maailmale: erinevatele rahvastele, keeltele, kultuuridele ja tänapäevastele loomingulistele väljendusviisidele.

Juhannuse pidustuste ajal osaleme 2. soome-ugri avatud foorumil (2nd Finno-Ugric Open Forum), viime läbi töötubasid ning loomulikult toome lavale ka killukese 𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘦’i.

👉 Silma tasub peal hoida ka Finno-Ugric Capitals of Culture 2.0 Facebooki lehel, kus avaldatakse jooksvalt teavet sellest, mis kultuuripealinnas parasjagu toimub ja toimuma hakkab.

Meie osalust toetavad Hõimurahvaste programm (Eesti Keele Instituut), Finlandia Foundation National, Inc. ja Estonian American National Council - Eesti Rahvuskomitee Ühendriikides 🇪🇪🇺🇸🇫🇮

Kohtume teisel pool ookeani! 👋

New exhibition Liminal Sanctuaries by Michigan artist Bonnie Loukus, who has close connections to both Finland and Estonia, has been opened at the Finlandia Art Gallery in Hancock.

The exhibition features oil paintings of solitary animals and forest floor ecosystems, in between reality and some incorporeal place where they exist without human interference.

Bonnie Loukus is a Keweenaw-based multidisciplinary artist practicing oil painting, printmaking, letterpress, and book arts. Her work explores themes such as the intrinsic value of animals, plant diversity, small ecosystems, symbolism, incorporeal life, and solitude. Her work is part of US and international collections and recent artist residencies have taken her to Estonia, Isle Royale National Park, and Keweenaw Land Trust’s Silver Island. She is the executive director of the Copper Country Community Arts Center in Hancock. Loukus continues to enjoy living on a beautiful and remote peninsula in Lake Superior while visiting Finland and Estonia as often as possible to connect with contemporary art, heritage, and the land.

The exhibition will be on display at the Finlandia Art Gallery (Finnish American Heritage Center) in Hancock through June 10.

On April 23, over 100 people attended the opening of the exhibition by Michigan artist Bonnie Loukus with close connections to both Finland and Estonia.

Did you know that we are less than two months away from the main events of Hancock - Finno-Ugric Capital of Culture 2026?

Visit Keweenaw has published the preliminary program of the four-day Juhannus - summer solstice - celebration that will take place in Hancock on June 17-20. It is a rich and diverse mix of music, dance, discussions and presentations of and about Finno-Ugric peoples, building on Hancock's annual Juhannus tradition. This year, Hancock is expecting guests not only from Finland but also Estonia and, hopefully, Hungary and Norway. Hancock is also looking forward to hosting representatives of Finno-Ugric peoples of Russia, including Erzya, Udmurts and others. Quite probably it will be the biggest Finno-Ugric event to be ever held in North America. Check out the program and if possible, join us for the Finno-Ugric Juhannus celebration in Hancock!

Experience blazing bonfires, electrifying Finnish Music and dance, soul-cleansing saunas, an ice-cold Long Drink Beer Garden, and an unforgettable weekend of revelry and SISU – the Finnish spirit of resilience – on the shimmering waters of the Portage Canal! Dear friends of the Finno-Ugric Capitals of Culture programme! In March this year, our previous page, which we had built up over a decade, disappeared for an unknown reason. Despite our numerous attempts to find out what happened, and to restore the page, Meta never even replied to us.

While still awaiting Meta's response, we decided to start a new page because there is so much exciting content we want to share with you. This includes the programme of Hancock - Finno-Ugric Capitals of Culture 2026, including the upcoming Juhannus Summer Solstice Celebration on June 17-20, the ongoing competition for the 2027 title, and much more.

Please follow our page and invite folks who might be interested in this civic initiative that brings together Finno-Ugrians and their friends across the world!

Head soome-ugri kultuuripealinnade sõbrad! Selle aasta märtsis kadus kultuuripealinnade Facebook'i lehekülg arusaamatutel põhjustel. Vaatamata meie rohketele päringutele ei saanud me Meta'lt ühtegi selgitust, miks nii juhtus.

Kuigi me siiani ootame Meta'lt vastust, otsustasime alustada uue leheküljega, kuna meil on lihtsalt niivõrd palju põnevat sisu, mida soovime teiega jagada.
