Did you know that long periods of stress , trauma , emotional abuse causes brain damage ? And that chronic fatigue is actually a symptom of healing . It’s not laziness , but rather the brain repairing and healing certain chemicals - which takes ALOT of energy .
Trauma and chronic stress create BIG chemical shifts and damage in the brain . During long periods , cortisol and adrenaline stay elevated and stabilising neurotransmitters like serotonin , dopamine & GABA (gamma aminobutyric acid ) to become imbalanced . This causes the amygdala to become overactive , the hippocampus to struggle with regulation , and the prefrontal cortex to lose efficiency .
Fight or flight kicks in , OR system shut down and numbing
When healing begins ….the brain has to undo these adaptations . Cortisol levels start to lower , neurotransmitters move back toward balance and stress driven neural pathways are gradually replaced through neuroplasticity
This rebuilding process requires a large amount of metabolic energy . The fatigue that shows up is simply the brain using resources to recalibrate its chemistry and rebuild healthier , more regulated circuits . GABA plays a central role in how the nervous system shifts between activation and rest, which is why it becomes so important in the context of trauma and healing.
During periods of chronic stress or threat , the brain often reduces GABA activity because the system is prioritising alertness over relaxation . This keeps you in a state of readiness , reactivity or hypervigilence…. useful for short term danger , but exhausting and destabilising over time . Lower GABA means the brain has fewer “ brakes “ , so stress signals fire more easily and more intensely .
You can see every healer , psychiatrist under the sun … you can drink monoatomic gold ….you can do all the plant medicine …. you can even sticky tape crystals to your forehead BUT the main regenerative help here is time & rest .
( personally I’d do a combination of all of them , yet prioritise the recovery to rest ) 🌹🪽✨
