Today is Ederlezi, the day when winter ends, spring takes over, and wishes come true. If you draw your wish on a small piece of paper, just like the talented artist Mine Burçkin's beautiful hand-drawn visual here, and bury it under a rose bush before midnight, they say it finds its way 🌷

During Madland Festival, we are so lucky to celebrate spring with a table that travels from Puglia to Istanbul, from Venice to Antakya. We have Elvan Uysal Bottoni, flying from Rome, Zoe visiting from Brinkholm, Gizem Şimşek and Gözde Aydın in the kitchen, and Mames Babagenush on the stage!

See you soon!

In the 1960s, as Denmark's economy boomed, workers from Turkey began arriving in Copenhagen, settling on Istedgade in Vesterbro. They built lives here while adapting to a country entirely different from their own.

From the 90s to the 2010s, Vesterbro gentrified step by step. Many of the places you see today on Istedgade were once their coffe shops, kiosks, butchers, groceries and flower shops. As the neighborhood gradually gentrified, they drifted away to the suburbs, as it happens all around the world.

70 years later, we want to honor that labor and connect the neighborhood's past to its present. Together with Distortion Festival, we're closing Istedgade and setting a 100-meter meyhane table. The finest Turkish raki, some meze, but the best: the conversation. Talents behind Meyhane, Gözde Aydın is cooking classical İstanbul tastes, and Mine Burçkin is painting the tables!

Malik Çamlıca will take us through his remarkable collection of Anatolian folk, psychedelic rock and disco. Then Orkun picks up with the electronic energy the festival calls for.

The event is presented by filmmaker Kerem Soyyılmaz, and powered by Distortion.

Happy May Day to all workers fighting for the labour rights ✊🏽🚩

will be visiting us on the 8th of May!

Many of us followed her travel documentaries on television for years in Turkey. When we crossed paths again in Copenhagen, she was doing something just as meaningful, only this time with her hands in the soil.

We invited Zoe to Meyhane to hear the full story from TV documentary-making in Turkey to farming/writing in Denmark.

Zoe and her family grow organic vegetables and grain at Brinkholm; an old farm along Tryggevælde river at Karise. Their local produce and flour meet costumers , and restaurants&bakeries in Copenhagen. Zoe is politically active in
She’s been a part of an international seed solidarity project with farmers in Gaza. Their seeds are floating in Mediterannean Sea now 🇵🇸

“Græskarplaneten” is her children’s book in both Turkish and Danish. It’s the story of four seasons evolving around a pumpkin seed and Zoe’s son Theo. Based on true stories, Græskarplaneten gives insights about food and seed sovereignty, framed in Brinkholm’s beautiful natural surroundings.

Zoe joined Madland Festivals before. Now we get to know her more, around the Meyhane table.

Babegenush, or babagannuş, is an eggplant recipe known from the Balkans all the way to the Middle East. The idea is simple: grill eggplants, mix with vinegar, garlic, olive oil and herbs. It is one of our favorite mezes at a raki table. Our aunties and grandmothers used to put up a fire in the garden, burn oak wood, and throw the eggplants right into it. The smell is a time machine that takes us back to our small Thracian town.

If you are in Copenhagen, Babegenush refers to something else too. A band of wildly talented musicians who have spent twenty years playing Balkan, Eastern European and Middle Eastern tunes; colorful, alive, the kind of music that carries the same warmth as that garden fire.

And are we not the luckiest? They said yes to visiting Meyhane!
On the 8th of May, we are honored to welcome Mames Babegenush for a mini concert.

We will serve the one and only fig raki of Turkey also, try not to miss it 😋 Thank you for the beautiful visual Mine ❤️

𝐌𝐞𝐲𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐞 𝐚𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐝𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐅𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐥!

Food carries things. A recipe, a drink, a table set far from home. Things that keep us ourselves.

During the Covid months in 2020, locked in Italy, unable to go home, Elvan Uysal Bottoni looked at a glass of rakı and saw her home, Istanbul. She, then started working on her exploration with raki and world tastes. That same year, we opened the first and only Meyhane in Copenhagen. For the same reason.

Six years later, we get to cook with her, as part of Madland Festival 2026 at the beautiful Kitchen Collective! Turkish-Italian recipes, around a glass of raki on the table!

Elvan Uysal Bottoni, author, columnist, jury member on olive oil and honey production in Italy, and the author whose book on rakı and Italian cuisine has lived on our bedside table ever since. Elvan will cook with us, talk with us, and if you have one of her children books at home, bring it, she'll sign it for you.

A Mediterranean table, up north, inside Copenhagen's festival for people who care deeply about food and where it comes from.

With the touch of Mine Burckin, one of the talents behind Meyhane will be decorating the evening! Mine works in different medias such as painting, needlework and textile, addressing themes like being uprooted and disconnection between artist and artists’ own environment.

The menu is coming soon! Only 50 seats.
