ACT上海当代戏剧节 (ACT Shanghai Int’l Contemporary Theatre Festival), or ACT Shanghai in short is an annual festival of performing arts beloved by audience in Shanghai and beyond since 2005 ACT Shanghai International Theatre Festival (ACT), hosted by Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre (SDAC) in its various venues, is an annual platform presenting international and Chinese performing arts in Shanghai. It not only introduces exciting contemporary theatre productions and performances from around the world to local audiences, but also provides a platform for arts professionals home and abroad to discover inspiring international works.

screens? And what emotional needs and desires are being expressed through these seemingly light and cute contents?
In Tiny, Fluffy, Sweet, Chinese theatre maker Chen Ran traces the visual evolution of the panda—from early photographs and cultural dissemination to its current status as an internet icon. Along the way, she realizes how her own emotional experiences have been continually reshaped through watching and sharing these images.

🌟 Asia-Europe Cultural Festival is back — and heading to 🇨🇳!

, in collaboration with the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre (SDAC), is proud to announce the launch of the Asia-Europe Cultural Festival 2025 — Main Programme running from 3 September to 9 October 2025 in 🇨🇳, presented alongside the ACT Shanghai International Theatre Festival!

For its 7th edition, the festival brings a dynamic and diverse lineup of performances, film screenings, and immersive experiences that celebrate the rich cultural dialogue between and through the arts. 🌏✨

A poetic, playful exploration of identity, borders, and imagination.

📅 6-7 Sept – Jérôme Bel with Xiao Ke 🇫🇷🇨🇳
A minimalist duet reflecting on art, politics, and cross-cultural dialogue.

📅 13-14 Sept – Foe of an Arrow Wound by Paper Tiger Theatre 🇨🇳 with Humboldt Forum 🇩🇪
A multimedia journey through cultural memory, colonial history, and inherited stories.

📅 7-9 Oct – Ocean Cage by Tianzhuo Chen 🇨🇳 & Siko Setyanto 🇮🇩
An immersive ritual blending sound, movement, and myth in a post-human world.

🎥 10 Sept – China 354 by Luis Castro 🇪🇸 (Film screening at Cervantes Institute)
A unique visual diary capturing contemporary China through 354 one-minute video fragments.

This year’s festival embodies a thoughtful curatorial vision, exploring the fluid intersections of identity, memory, and cultural exchange between Asia and Europe.

From everyday life of individual to wars and geopolitics, our world seems to be on a worrying trajectory now, polarised, fragmented. ACT2025 full programme announced! Artists, producers, and institutions all have to navigate their ways in this increasingly precarious landscape, to continue, to survive, to make meaning, to feel less lonely. If art still means something higher than our own existence, something about our spirits and dreams as human beings, how would it face this challenging moment? Under the theme of ‘Synergy’, ACT2025 invites works created and realised through various forms of working together. These results of collaboration across languages, cultural backgrounds, national borders, geographical distance, generations, and platforms remind us of theatre as a place for us to encounter and to be together.
