I remember our time in Calabar in 2013, Alex Ekubo and I spoke of a Cameroon International Film Festival. Ten years later, here we are, standing in the light of the 2024 edition, celebrating the cinema you loved. Alex Ekubo said to me, I am proud of you, my friend, my brother. You are a great man. Your dedication to promoting the Cameroon Film Industry will payoff. I said to him. Alex is not easy, i feel like giving up. Alex replied. The world sees the success, but I saw the sacrifice and the pain. I remember the words of Mr. Bassek Ba Kobhio, who told me never to give up, sharing the heavy burden he carried for Écrans Noirs. Like me, Mr. Bassek Ba Kobhio pushed through being misjudged, bullied, and condemned all to elevate Cameroonian and African cinema, even when it cost hin everything and so much more. Looking at the world now, it all feels so fleeting. This vanity means nothing when, in just 72 hours, a voice can go silent. My heart is heavy. I will miss you deeply.

A Tribute to a Titan - Bassek Ba Kobhio

The Iroko tree that held the Cameroon film industry together has fallen. A giant upon whose shoulders many filmmakers stood, and a visionary leader who propelled our cinematic landscape for over three decades, is no more.

It is with immense sadness and profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Bassek Ba Kobhio, the legendary Cameroonian director and Director General of the Écrans Noirs Festival.

A Legacy of Firsts

Papa Bassek Ba Kobhio was not just a filmmaker; he was the architect of an era. His tireless struggle to rebuild and perfect our sector led to the creation of:

The Cameroon Film Industry (CFI)

The Cameroon Film Critics Association

The Écrans Noirs Film Festival, which stands today as one of Africa’s premier audiovisual events.

An International Loss

His influence crossed borders, earning him the respect of the entire continent. The entire Cameroon International Film Festival-CAMIFF join in mourning a father whose contribution to African cinema and Cameroon in particular was truly enormous.

A Personal Farewell

On a personal note, I will miss you deeply. You were a pioneer, a supporter, and a guide. As we grapple with this void, we are left to ask: What is the future of the Cameroon film industry without its cornerstone?

Your vision remains our blueprint. We will miss you, Great Man.

At its core, the Cameroon International Film Festival (CAMIFF) is more than just a screening event; it is a strategic intersection of tourism, culture, diplomacy, and investment. Recognizing that cinema serves as a powerful medium for social and cultural exchange, CAMIFF has become a masterclass in global connection.
A High-Profile Exchange between the Cameroon International Film Festival-CAMIFF team and the US Embassy Yaounde. Furthering this mission of cultural diplomacy, Charge d’Affaires a.i. Robert Barney recently welcomed acclaimed American actor, director, and producer Blair Underwood and his wife to the U.S. Embassy Yaounde. The visit, following the festival's conclusion, sparked vital dialogue between international stars and the local creative community. Joined by. Prisma James. Renowned Cameroonian Nollywood actress. Germaine Kang aka Roy Mamah. An Expert public relations executive.
Empowering the Next Generation
Together, they engaged with local filmmakers to share professional insights and global perspectives on the evolving film industry. This collaboration underscores the power of storytelling to unite nations and inspire the next wave of creatives in Cameroon and across the globe.

The Cameroon International Film Festival-CAMIFF and the Cameroon film industry presented Blair Underwood to his people, THE PROUD PEOPLE OF BABUNGO in Buea. With the blessings of His Royal Majesty, Fon Ndofoa Zofoa III. Fon Of Babungo.
Blair Underwood’s pride stems from more than just a DNA test result; it represents a reclamation of identity. By identifying with the Grassfields region of Cameroon, he joins a growing number of African Americans who are bridging the gap between the United States and the "Motherland."
"To know who you are, you must know where you come from."
His journey serves as a beautiful reminder that our stories don't start with the hardships of the past, but with the strength and artistry of the civilizations that came before.
Cameroon—and specifically the North West Region—stands a little taller knowing one of its sons has "returned" with such honor.
