What Paris Saint-Germain delivered today against Bayern Munich was a terrifying level of discipline and tactical commitment.
Luis Enrique clearly learned from the first leg and managed today’s match with remarkable balance. PSG did not rely on high pressing or leave spaces exposed behind their defense throughout the game. Instead, they dropped into a low block and defended in front of their goal for long periods with incredible organization.
You could clearly see the defensive structure working in perfect harmony: Marquinhos stepping out to press Luis Díaz on the flank, Neves immediately dropping into the defensive line to cover, Zaïre Emery shifting across with him, Kvaratskhelia tracking back into midfield like a natural holding player, and Fabián Ruiz moving wide to support Mendes against Olise. A defensive system that truly deserves to be studied.
As for Bayern Munich, they only really woke up in the final moments with Harry Kane’s goal. What was strange is that the team relied heavily on long balls from Neuer, trying to win second balls and turn the match into a physical battle, something that does not resemble Kompany’s Bayern at all. And of course, the refereeing will generate plenty of debate.
For the second consecutive season, Paris Saint-Germain reach the UEFA Champions League final, proving once again, through both performances and results, that they currently possess the strongest football system in the world 👏
