6 REASONS NOT TO MISS “TANGO SUMMIT”
Toronto Tango Summit, an annual event of workshops and a gala milonga organised by long-time Toronto instructors and international performers Roxana & Fabian for both tan
go dancers and non-dancing Argentine Canadians in Toronto. If you’ve been to one before you’ll know this is a dazzling night but if you haven’t here are the 6 Reasons you should not allow this event to pass you by:
1. Live Music
When was the last time we danced to live music in Toronto? Maybe last year’s Tango Summit? Unfortunately it’s very rare we have an opportunity to create the dance at the same time as the players create the music.
2. Argentine Personality
The Toronto Tango Summit is held annually to coincide with Argentina’s Independence Day (July 9) and is a major event on the calendar for Argentine Canadians whether they tango or not. The Consulado General de la República Argentina en Toronto is a sponsor so the Consul and the who’s who of Toronto Argentine society all attend.
3. Tango Plus Entertainment
Usually we dance and sit back between tandas to watch our Toronto tango friends dance. This night we won’t be able to make up our minds whether to maximise the opportunity to dance to live music or sit there and watch how the energy of the players combines to create such an amazing sound. Our senses will be tantalised with excitement of the gauchos, the soulfull ballads of tango singers and a defying performance by Roxana and Fabian.
4. Perfect for Non-dancers
Most of us have significant others, family and friends who don’t dance but would like to be included in our tango world, this is a night for them. They can relax at a table with a drink from the bar, enjoy the various spectacles of entertainment and, most importantly, admire our skill on the floor.
5. Elegance
Tango is an elegant dance yet too often in Toronto with its high rents we are relegated to church basements with dodgy floors and questionable sound systems in dubious neighbourhoods. This is a night to twirl in a spacious ballroom with a dedicated dance floor to the strident tones of a grand piano.
6. Chacarera
Inmediately before the Milonga, there is a chacarera workshop taught by the folkloric experts. This is your ticket to joining the fun next time the chacarera is danced at a special milonga
