Joy in the Park on May 8 was one for the books! The weather was on our side, the park was full of smiley faces, and The Esplanade felt alive from one end to the other.

On May 8, we gathered as a community to celebrate music, dance, art, play, and the unveiling of PASI, Jamii’s newest photo exhibition and the largest outdoor photo exhibition on The Esplanade. Seeing neighbours walk through the exhibition, stop in front of the portraits, recognize faces, and take in the many stories connected to Toronto’s soccer summer was something.

The evening was filled with so many joyful moments. Aline Morales and Rudy Ray brought warmth and rhythm to the unveiling of PASI, setting the tone for a celebration. Joaquín Núñez & Habana Safari had the park moving with music that made it impossible not to dance. AIM held us in a powerful moment with Ashes, reminding us how much can be felt through movement and storytelling. Jamii’s LAINI youth performed their dance piece they had been working on for the past two months with the lead of Nickeshia Garrick .

And there was even more! Linda Epp turned little faces into colourful works of art, Caitlin Morris-Cornfield brought magic to the crowd on stilts, kids got creative with soccer-inspired crafts, vendors filled the art fair with beautiful pieces, and neighbours stayed to talk, laugh, dance, and enjoy being together. At the end, everyone enjoyed a piece of delicious cake to celebrate Jamii’s 15th year anniversary!

This was one of those evenings that made us feel so proud of what art can create in a neighbourhood!

Our next Joy in the Park is happening on Friday, June 21 at 6 PM. More info soon!

LAINI Movie Night Happening Tomorrow!

This upcoming movie night features The Sea Beast, an animated adventure that follows a young girl and a legendary sea monster hunter as they set out across the ocean. The film explores themes of courage, friendship, and seeing the world from a different perspective.

Belonging is a program for older adults in the St. Lawrence neighbourhood, created to nurture connection, creativity, and joy.

From movement and visual arts classes to lively sing-alongs and neighbourhood outings, there’s always something bringing people together. And last but certainly not least… the potlucks.

Food is essential to building community. Sitting down to eat gives everyone the chance to slow down, catch up with friends, swap stories, and share favourite dishes from home. Around the table, new friendships form and old ones grow stronger.

🥗 Our next potluck is May 7th at 12pm at the Jamii Hub.It’s free, just bring a dish to share!

Here’s what Camille, one of our Belonging participants, shared about the Belonging program:
“I just wanted to take a moment to express my heartfelt appreciation for all the hard work you've put into creating opportunities for me and our fellow Jamii members. Your efforts allow us to engage with and enjoy a variety of cultural and artistic events that many of us might otherwise miss out on.Additionally, your initiatives have built a wonderful sense of camaraderie among us, encouraging everyone to connect and get to know each other better. Thank you for everything you do; it means so much to all of us.”

Jamii’s Belonging Older Adults programs are sponsored by Government of Canada , New Horizons for Seniors Program, and Canada Council for the Arts .

Valerie Strang speaks about care with such honesty and heart.

From raising her daughter and encouraging her to follow her dreams, to caring for Elders in Pikangikum, Valerie’s words carry both tenderness and strength. Valerie is an inspiration to her entire community as she was part of the first cohort of young people to graduate from the Support Social Work program in Pikangikum.

In this video portrait, she reflects on family, grief, learning, and the deep pride she feels in caring for others. You can feel her hope as she speaks about continuing her studies and building a future rooted in compassion and community.

This video is part of a portrait series initiated by Jamii in 2018 as part of our ongoing collaboration with the Pikangikum community, the Eenchokay Birchstick School, and the Pikangikum Education Authority. Valerie’s portrait was filmed in Fall 2025 by Ana Higuera Figo and directed by Isorine Marc.
This project is funded and supported by the Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council, and the J.P. Bickell Foundation. With special thanks to Marjorie and Jim Dawson.

We are deeply grateful to the Pikangikum community for their trust, collaboration, and for making these shared stories possible.

As part of our video portrait series (October 2025), and in collaboration with Eenchokay Birchstick School, Jamii’s Artistic & Executive Director, Isorine Marc, alongside videographer Ana Figo, spent time with high school student Michaela Peters-Turtle. Michaela was brave enough to sit in front of the camera and welcome us into her world with warmth and open heart.

This video portrait is part of a series that intends to raise awareness about Pikangikum First Nation in Northwestern Ontario—a community Jamii has been honoured to partner with since 2018. Michaela’s story is one that gently stays with you.

Through her words, she shares glimpses of everyday life in Pikangikum—school, family, porridge, summer days at her auntie’s cabin, walleye on the land, and trips across the lake and beyond.
There is something deeply moving in the way she speaks about the people and places that make her feel safe, cared for, and happy. Through her quiet presence, we see her strength, her humour, and the rhythms of her daily life.

Pikangikum is an Ojibwe First Nations reserve in Northwestern Ontario, home to over 3,000 people. Since 2018, Jamii and Pikangikum have built a meaningful relationship through photo exhibitions, workshops, video portraits, and murals, in both Pikangikum and The Esplanade.

We extend our deepest gratitude to the Pikangikum community for their trust, collaboration, and the opportunity to share these stories.
