“It’s about time.”

Three words that inspired Powell River’s newest musical spectacle. Founded in 2017, Townsite Jazz Festival aims to attract some of Canada’s finest jazz musicians to Powell River, on a mission to entertain a coastal community and inspire a new generation of artists. Director Paul Cummings, a lifelong jazz enthusiast and ‘brains behind’ the event, has recruited a team of heavy-hi

tters including associate president Phil Dwyer, one of this country’s foremost stewards of the jazz tradition. Intimate venues and a historic neighbourhood serve as the perfect backdrop for a genre that only gets better with age.

• The Townsite Jazz Festival Society •

TJFS is a community-based, not-for-profit society based in Powell River, BC. Its aim is to provide an opportunity for secondary and post-secondary school music students to learn from and perform with professional musicians in a live, public setting; to celebrate Canada’s rich jazz tradition; to utilize the unique setting of the Townsite National Historic District; and to connect artists with new audiences in the community.

After hosting some amazing organ players at our festival over the years (Dr. Tony Genge, Brian Charette, Chris Gestrin, Nick Peck) we recently jumped at the chance to purchase a vintage Hammond B3 with a Leslie speaker. Here's Peter Van Deursen giving us a demonstration shortly after delivery.

Attendees of the SOLD OUT Dawn Pemberton B3 Quartet on April 10 – and at gigs for years to come – are in for a real treat!

Here's a throwback to 2018 when Black Gardenia first graced the Townsite Jazz Festival stage. We're thrilled that the inimitable Daphne Roubini and her band will be back this year. Tickets are still available! Friday, April 10, 7:30pm at Max Cameron Theatre.

Inspired by the classic jazz recordings of the 1940s and 1950s, Black Gardenia creates music that feels timeless — at once vintage in spirit and alive with modern nuance. A festival fave!
