Sediments - Experience accumulates, like layers of sediment building over time. An encounter offers the opportunity to reflect on singular moments, ideas, and feelings, a kind of meditation from which a shared world of sensibility emerges. Observed in this way, it becomes a stratum that traces awareness and meaning between people.

1-3. Viva Egoyan-Rokeby, Witnesses, graphite on paper, AI generated text, birch, 15 drawings, each 14 × 20 cm, 2025.

Did you know that Art Matters is an artist run centre? If you’ve ever been curious about what an artist run centre is, how to start your own, or how to get involved (beyond this festival) this workshop is the place to start!

Quebec has a rich history of artist-run centers: non-profit organizations operated by artists for artists. Like Art Matters, artist run centres promote values of participation, experimentation and innovation. The main activity of these institutions is to encourage the production, promotion, and research of contemporary art. All this, in spaces that exist outside of commercial structures, independent of the imperatives of the art market.

Wednesday March 25 (18:00–20:00)
VAV Gallery, 1395 boul. Rene-Levesque

The artist callout is live! This year, we extend an open invitation to consider our shifting landscapes and the foundations we build upon them through the theme of Unstable Grounds. As we face ever-mounting uncertainties, Art Matters asks you to consider what it means to come together and form community as a radical act.

The theme of ‘Unstable Grounds’ asks, “How do you navigate our current landscape?” It encourages exploration of art as a lens through which to examine our place in the past, contextualize our role in the present, and envision a future.

All “Art” matters, and the festival has seen the inclusion of traditional visual arts mediums, installation, new media, performance, music, film, literary arts, and so on. We encourage artists from all disciplines to apply with their work and wish to exhibit a wide diversity of styles.

Art Matters 2026 honours creation, community, and collaboration. When considering your submission, take the opportunity to dream, to project, to yearn, and to righteously imagine.

Submission deadline: November 30th, 2025.
