Join us for a chill and interactive “Blackout” and “Found” poetry session to deconstruct everyday media and reflect on settler responsibility, global displacement, and solidarity from Turtle Island, to Kashmir, to Palestine.

How do we speak truth to power when the very language we use has been shaped by colonial history?
In honor of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, join Speak Your Truth and Chachees Chai Markham Chachee’s Chai Cafe for an evening of tactile, creative resistance and deep reflection. We invite community members, artists, and activists to participate in an interactive beginner-friendly Found Poetry & Blackout Poetry Workshop.

Using discarded magazines, media texts, and mainstream news prints, we will physically dismantle
dominant media narratives. By cutting, fragmenting, and blacking out text, we will uncover hidden truths,
confront our responsibilities as settlers on this land, and process the heavy realities of displacement, state
violence, and systemic erasure.

This creative space is intentionally designed to bridge local and global conversations. As we honor the
survival and sovereignty of Indigenous peoples on Turtle Island, we will also turn our reflections
outward—examining our shared human threads of resistance and solidarity with occupied and displaced
Indigenous populations globally, including Palestine. No prior writing or art experience is necessary. All
materials (texts, markers, scissors, and paper) will be provided, alongside a curated selection of writing
prompts to guide your reflection.

Speak Your Truth brings together young artists, entrepreneurs and creatives from across the GTA for a night built around community, creativity and connection 🎨

Throughout the night:
- Shop from youth-owned small businesses
- Watch live poetry, spoken word, music and rap performances
- Get creative at our scrapbooking table and other activities
- Enjoy dinner — included with your ticket
- Meet new people and connect with the community
