ARCHITECTURE AND CONVERSATIONS
Saturday, April 11, 2026 at 8 p.m.
Cornell Recital Hall
3201 Bur Oak Ave, Markham

Karl Jenkin’s Palladio takes inspiration from the eponymous sixteenth-century architect Andrea Palladio. Jenkins himself notes that “Two of Palladio’s hallmarks are mathematical harmony and architectural elements borrowed from classical antiquity,” and Jenkins himself structures the music based on similar mathematic proportions.

Inspired by the famous Brandenburg Concertos, the Concerto in E-flat (Dumbarton Oaks) was the last piece that Stravinsky wrote before emigrating to America in 1939. The piece inspires the idea of a musical conversation, with each of the instruments appearing as its own character.

The concert concludes with Britten’s Variations of a theme by Frank Bridge, a set of ten variations written as a tribute to Britten’s teacher; each theme is intended to represent one aspect of Bridge’s personality.

The Kindred Spirits Orchestra will present a program they’re calling Virtuosity and Revolution, featuring 20th century music by three composers with music that helped to define the era.

03/08/2026

Manuel de Falla’s El Sombrero de tres picos (The Three-Cornered Hat), Suite No. 2 draws on Andalusian folk traditions, flamenco idioms, and the expressive depth of cante jondo, originally conceived for ballet with sets by Pablo Picasso.

Acclaimed Italian pianist Antonio Di Cristofano then performs Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G major — a vibrant fusion of jazz, folk colour, and classical elegance.

The program concludes with Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 12, a strikingly programmatic work that stands apart from much of his symphonic output.

OPERATIC RHAPSODIES
Saturday, February 7, 2026 at 8 p.m.
Flato Markham Theatre
171 Town Centre Blvd

Ravel, Rhapsodie espagnole
Debussy, Fantasie for piano and orchestra
R. Strauss, Le Bourgeois gentilhomme

One of Ravel’s earliest orchestral compositions, the Rapsodie espagnole is divided into four movements. The first features a particularly prominent motif comprising pitches F–E–D–C-sharp; the motif is all the more notable in that it returns throughout the three subsequent movements.

Debussy’s Fantaisie pour piano et orchestre holds a special place in his output as his only work for solo instrument and orchestra. Subtle, atmospheric, and richly coloured, it offers a rare glimpse into the emergence of the composer’s unmistakable musical voice.

Richard Strauss’ Le Bourgeois gentilhomme (The Middle-Class Aristocrat) was originally intended to serve as the framing device for his opera Ariadne auf Naxos; when the reception for this structure was mixed, Strauss opted to remove the Bourgeois music and transform it into its own suite.

SOUNDS OF THE SEASON
Saturday, December 6, 2025 at 8 p.m.
Flato Markham Theatre
171 Town Centre Blvd, Markham

A holiday classic with a twist! If you love Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker suite then get ready for the Beatlecracker suite, which implants popular tunes from The Beatles into the Nutcracker suite.

Harrison Yang Meng then performs Walton’s Concerto for viola and orchestra. This concerto was originally composed for violist Lionel Tertis; wary of the modernity of the composition, Tertis rejected it only to regret this decision later in life.

Dukas’ Symphony in C is in three movement rather than the typical four and uses melodic and harmonic techniques that anticipate his popular tone poem The Sorcerer’s Apprentice five years later.
