What makes a character feel like a person, rather than a type?

How do we write people whose lives and experiences are different from our own without flattening them into stereotypes, making them carry the weight of “representation”, or getting so worried about getting it wrong that we stop having fun?

Writing Diversity: Beyond Tokenism & Stereotypes is a practical, interactive workshop about just that. Cristina Santos Author will share tools for creating characters with specificity, interiority, contradictions and agency, while exploring some of the hidden “defaults” that can sneak into our stories without us noticing.

This isn’t about ticking boxes or writing by a new set of rules. It’s about making our characters richer, our worlds bigger, and our storytelling better.

Can you believe we are only a week away from our big festival! Now it's time to share a little more information. We have a great lineup of things to do at Writers of the Realm 2026, from listening to author readings to joining a writing workshop, raffle prizes, attending an author panel session and even some bookish scavenger hunts for prizes! Check out our attached images to plan your day, and don't forget, the Fredericton Inn has a restaurant on site if you need a break or a bite to eat! We also have some more surprises waiting in the wings as well!

Reminder: There are no tickets required for the daytime events. It's just $2 at the door, and proceeds go to the Writers' Federation of New Brunswick!!
