Tonight the Paulina Hernandez Trio celebrates the Women of Jazz, at the Watermark Theatre

Women have been involved with jazz since its inception, but all too often their achievements are not as well-known. Of course we have Billie, Ella, and Sarah, but there are so many more — singers, instrumentalists and composers — that have made a worthy contribution.

Paulina Hernandez Trio focuses primarily on Latin jazz and jazz fusion, classical jazz but with a modern twist, along with many original compositions and arrangements. From Mexico Paulina Hernandez graduated from Holland College and St. Francis Xavier University. Also in the band, drummer Heidi Burns, a student at St. Francis Xavier University student, and Maya Marquez a Colombian bassist and student of Holland College.

There are still a few tickets left for Sunday night's concert!

Women of Jazz; The Music of Sarah Vaughn, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and more.
Women have been involved with jazz since its inception, but all too often their achievements are not as well-known or trumpeted, so to speak. Of course we have Billie, Ella, and Sarah, but there are so many more — singers, instrumentalists and composers — that have made a worthy pantheon. On this night we will explore the greats of Jazz history, and dive into some lesser known names, as we celebrate the contributions from the Women of Jazz.
Performed by the Paulina Hernandez Trio, a musical group that focuses primarily on Latin jazz and jazz fusion, classical jazz but with a modern twist. We have a repertoire of arrangements and compositions made only by women and some original tunes composed by Paulina Hernandez, a Mexican pianist who graduated from Holland College and St. Francis Xavier University, her style is striking. Also, in the band, we have Heidi Burns, a drummer and St. Francis Xavier University student, and member of several bands in the local New Scotia scene, she comes to delight us with a solid and unique rhythm as well. Last but not least, we have Maya Marquez, a Colombian bassist and student of Holland College, influenced by Latin rhythms and more.
