What’s the River Street collective reading?

Michael Schmidt is reading My Friends by Fredrik Backman (Simon & Schuster).

“This novel was recommended to me by someone whose reading tastes I trust, and now I feel I can definitely recommend it to others. The story is witty, easy-to-read, and very moving, capturing the magic of lifelong friendships that begin in adolescence on an intimate level, and there are plenty of twists and surprises to keep me turning to the next page.”

Michael Schmidt is an emerging writer from the quiet woods and fields of rural Southern Ontario, with a keen interest in telling stories that explore the fantastical. He completed a BA for English and Creative Writing at Western University in 2022, and then went on to study publishing at Centennial College in 2024. He’s had poetry featured in Blank Spaces Magazine. You can find him on Instagram and X (formerly Twitter) as Michael Schmidt

“Frida Davis-Lefebvre returns to her hometown in B.C. after selling her debt-ridden Toronto restaurant and getting sober, hoping for a fresh start. Instead, she’s living with her two mothers, working alongside her very hot ex-fiancĂ© and getting to know her s***m donor, whom she’s never met and who has now moved onto the family property. As old relationships and new family complications pile up, Frida starts to wonder whether the life she thought she wanted is actually the one right in front of her.“

What’s the River Street collective reading?

River Street Founder and award-winning author Hollay Ghadery is reading Soft Targets: Guns in America and the Kids Caught in the Crossfire (Street Noise Books, 2026).

About Soft Targets:

A work of comics journalism around the stories of four kids who have died in the U.S. due to gun violence or gun negligence—the leading cause of death for minors since 2020, and dispelling myths of the history of gun culture in the U.S. Who have we lost? How did we get here? Why do gun-lovers love their guns? These are the questions that people across America ask every time another news story broadcasts a death from gun violence. With compassionate, thoughtful journalism, this graphic novel explores the lives of four kids and teenagers and the guns that ended their lives: from incidents of gang violence to school shootings to su***de. These tragedies are presented alongside the history of gun culture and legislation, discussing the NRA, the legal system, and the racial imbalances in American gun violence.
