Alberta Bike Swap If it’s not in the sale – there is something significant that would prevent the bike from being safely ridden away from the swap.

Alberta Bike Swap Ltd.™ is a registered non-profit that provides a safe place to buy, sell, and donate bikes, fund safe CAN-BIKE cycling education, provide bike racks, pledge cyclists in charity rides, and help others with transportation security We put our money where our wheels are, and will continue to donate more than half the profit to community cycling-based initiatives rather than define success by money only. Bikes sold at the swap are safer than a garage sale purchase because our squad of volunteer bike techs who performs a basic safety and mechanical check of each bike. The issues we’ve had to deal with include a cracked frame, scratched off serial numbers, and a few stolen bikes. Some good bikes with a minor issue will go into the sale with a descriptive tag. We are geared toward name brand, adult oriented bikes. There are thousands of new economy bikes available from a number of outlets, they are referred to as ‘bicycle shaped objects’, that are better to look at than to ride. Unless they come to swap in brand new condition, they will not pass the safety check. We record all the serial numbers, there is paper trail of ownership that the police and RCMP support. We strongly suggest the new owner register their purchased bike with the Bike Index.

Seven days and counting!

Next week, we head to the ASTech Awards, where Alberta Bike Swap is honoured to be a finalist for technical innovation and community impact!

When we first started building the early software that power Alberta Bike Swap, we just wanted to fix a broken system and protect local cyclists from stolen property. To see that early adoption and technical foundation recognized at a provincial tech level is both humbling and surreal.

Our talented friends at Hatch Studios put together a fantastic video that captures the heart of what we do: combining proprietary technology, strict mechanical safety, CAN-BIKE cycling education, and grassroots community alliances.

A massive thank you to Hatch Studios for creating this feature, and to every volunteer, cyclist, and partner who has supported our tech and mission since day one.

We had to skip out on dancing at The Calgary Chamber of Commerce Gala this weekend, but it was for the absolute best reason possible! First, Chris is an engineer and I could not find steel-toed dancing shoes. Second, Chris taught legitimate CAN-BIKE cycling education to some great people in Edmonton.

While Calgary was celebrating local business, Chris was in Edmonton training a brand-new group of CAN-BIKE cycling instructor candidates.

Seeing the passion and commitment from this group was beyond uplifting: Kellen from Bike Bus Alberta (keeping kids moving safely!)
Laura from the City of Edmonton Reuse Centre (building safer municipal cycling connections)
Julie, a student and future water specialist at NAIT who knows that sustainable cities start with active transit.

Providing solid, standardized safety education is the exact reason we founded, fund, and support CAN-BIKE in Alberta. We believe that teaching riders how to handle traffic, recognize hazards, and ride with confidence creates lifelong cyclists.

A fancy night out is great, but empowering community leaders to teach bike safety for years to come? That’s what it's all about.

We are taking a moment today to say a giant THANK YOU to Calgarians and Albertans across the province!

Being named a finalist at the The Calgary Chamber of Commerce Business Awards was such a surreal and wonderful experience. While we didn't take home the top trophy, standing in a room full of Alberta’s brightest innovators, leaders, and social enterprises was an absolute win in our books.

Looking back, joining the Calgary Chamber was one of the best decisions we’ve ever made for Alberta Bike Swap.

Since 2011 Swap Central has been at our kitchen table—where we develop software, coordinate events with law enforcement, arrange feeding 200+ volunteers, and operate our non-profit operations. Getting up from the kitchen table other than to teach legitimate CAN-BIKE cycling education or walk for errands, and joining the Chamber showed us a whole new side of Calgary. We’ve had more fun, embarked on more adventures, met the most incredible local business owners, and built genuine friendships with people who care just as deeply about this city as we do.

Thank you to everyone who sent messages of encouragement, supported our events, and cheered us on. We are so proud to support the community through safe bikes and cycling education!

Back to work at the kitchen table—we have big things coming for next season!

The Calgary Chamber of Commerce: We were being filmed for the Calgary Chamber of Commerce Business Awards Gala this Friday, where we are incredibly honored and surprised to be a finalist for Social Enterprise!

The Location Choice: Why film at the Calgary Food Bank? Because we operate EVERYTHING—from our Bicycle Swap Software™, app development, ordering food for 200+ volunteers, to CAN-BIKE cycling education from our kitchen table. Trying to fit a full video production crew, lights, and a vintage road bike into our kitchen alongside our coffee maker and tripping on our rescued Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society - AARCS cats was a hard no!

The Strategic Alliance: The Calgary Food Bank is one of our 106 strategic alliances across the province. Donated bicycles that come to Alberta Bike Swap and Calgary Bike Swap events support incredible community causes. This gorgeous 1980s Eddy Merckx is being donated for auction at the upcoming CBC Calgary Food Bank Auction!

If you were cycling along the Bow River pathway on October 4 or 5 and saw a enthusiastic group of people waving and hollering at you near East Villageyyc RiverWalk Plaza... don't worry, you weren't imagining. That was us alongside Calgary Police Service! 🙋‍♂️🙋‍♀️🚲

And all that noise was worth it—together, we registered nearly 300 bikes over the weekend!

We lost count of how many times we heard, "I’ve been meaning to do this forever!" or "What is Bike Index?"—which is exactly why we love putting on these events. Educating local cyclists and getting nearly 300 serial numbers safely logged into the database made for an awesome two days.
