Get ready, Calgary! We have two major community registration drives lined up for September and October, and we can’t wait to see you there! 🚴‍♀️✨ We're working on Red Deer, Lethbridge, and Edmonton events as well and just waiting for approval.

As Alberta’s Bike Index and Project 529 Ambassadors, our mission is simple: keep bikes in the hands of the people who own them. Registering your bike takes less than five minutes, creates an official digital record of ownership, and gives law enforcement the tools they need to return recovered bikes. We're working with the police and RCMP in every city.

Here is the fall lineup (so far):
at Heritage Park:
September 20 — Join us alongside MLA Nagwan Al-Guneid for a fun-filled day celebrating active transit and community cycling!

East Village RiverWalk Plaza Registration Event:
October 4 & 5 — Catch us right on the RiverWalk Plaza pathway on the Sunday or your commute home on Monday.

How you can get involved:
Register your bike: Bring your bike to either event for on-the-spot registration.

Volunteer with us: Want to give back? We’re looking for enthusiastic volunteers to assist.

If you want to avoid import tariffs on your next bicycle, buying used is a practical option.

At Alberta Bike Swap events, bikes are from local sellers. Because these are pre-owned items sold within Canada, there are no import tariffs or cross-border duties added to the price.

We do have attendees drive in from the US for our Calgary Bike Swap events, but local pre-owned sales mean Canadian buyers avoid trade tariffs entirely while keeping money within the local economy.

What to expect at the swap:
Direct Local Sales: Money goes to the person selling the bike, not foreign trade duties.
Mechanical Checks: Every bike is inspected for safety before being placed on the floor.
Serial Number Vetting: We check all serial numbers to keep stolen bikes out of the swap.
Program Support: Proceeds help fund legitimate CAN-BIKE cycling education and the rebuild of bike donations to the 30 groups that get these bike donations.

Bicycles provide transportation security—not just in Calgary, and not just in our own backyard. 🚴‍♂️🌍

This past week was deeply rewarding as we had the joy of volunteering alongside our grandchildren at Bicycles for Humanity - Calgary (B4H Calgary). Working with some of the finest, most genuine people in the bike charity world, our team packed nearly 400 bicycles, 150 maternity kits, and bike parts into a shipping container bound for Zanzibar! 🇲🇼📦

What makes this network so special is how these organizations quietly help each other out:

When we mentioned that Calgary Chinook Kiwanis was short on bikes for their local youth giveaway, B4H stepped right up and rounded up 29 bikes to help them meet their goal!

A huge thank you to Bowcycle, an outstanding community partner that consistently supports bike charities that play well with others. Brent from Bow Cycle is truly fantastic and always hands-on—he was the engine behind packing the cargo trailer tight and safe! Brent also helped secure bikes for Two Wheel View to support their youth programming.

Teaching our grandchildren that a simple bicycle can deliver health, freedom, and economic security to someone half a world away is a lesson we’ll cherish forever. Thank you to everyone who made this week such a success! 💙 Calgary Bike Swap

What a productive and heart-warming week for the Alberta Bike Swap team! 🚴‍♀️✨

We started out hosting a Bike Index registration event in East Village. We had a steady stream of local cyclists stopping by RiverWalk Plaza to get their frames registered and secured. A massive thank you to the Calgary Police Service for supplying complimentary Bike Index stickers and joining us on-site, and to for hosting us in such a vibrant community spot.

Later in the week, we rolled up our sleeves with Calgary Chinook Kiwanis to rebuild bicycles for their annual kids' bike giveaway. Right now, they are looking for 24" bikes and mechanic volunteers. Every single child deserves a bike of their own, and it breaks our hearts when we don't have enough to hand out. If you have a gently used 24" bike to donate, Kiwanis International is a legitimate, deeply caring charity that has been quietly helping families in our city for years without fanfare.

Finally, this Friday we’re assisting B4H Bicycles for Humanity - Calgary Chapter Calgary with loading a massive shipping container of bicycles heading to Malawi! 🇲🇼 If you’d like to spend a few hours helping us break down and pack bikes for this incredible international project, drop us a line or message us—we’ll get you connected right away.

Bike Index is the world’s largest, non-profit, free bicycle registration database.

Think of it as a global registry and lost-and-found system for bikes. It allows bicycle owners to securely link their bike’s unique serial number, make, model, color, and photos to their contact information. It connects cyclists, police officers, bike shops, and community members into one shared network to prevent theft and return stolen property.

Why You Should Register Your Bike?
1. It Proves the Bike is Yours
The Problem: Bicycles don't come with license plates, and most people don't keep their original purchase receipts.

The Solution: Registering your serial number creates a permanent, timestamped digital record. If your bike is ever stolen, this is the legal proof required to claim it back.

2. Police Need It to Return Recovered Bikes
The Problem: The Calgary Police Service recovers hundreds of bikes every year, but hundreds end up auctioned off simply because officers can't figure out who owns them.

The Solution: Police officers check Bike Index in the field. When they find a suspected stolen bike, they scan or type in the serial number. If it’s in Bike Index, they can call you on the spot and bring it home.

3. Thousands of Community Eyes Watch Out for Your Ride
The Problem: Once a bike is stolen, it often ends up listed on online marketplaces or locked up across town.

The Solution: If you mark your bike as stolen on Bike Index or Project 529, local cyclists, bike shop employees, and online volunteers actively look for it. When someone spots your bike online or on the street, they can report its location through the system.

4. It’s 100% Free and Takes 2 Minutes
There are no hidden fees, subscription costs, or paywalls. Once registered, your bike is protected in the system for life.
